A band wants a website to have samples of tunes from their CD. How do you create an abbreviated sample from MP3's?

I'm really trying to put a link to an mp3 or .wma, so when the visitor clicks the link, it plays on whatever media player they have, and provide a link so they can get one if they need one. I was thinking this would keep the page's initial load time down for the user.
I just want to play a sample, not the whole tune, so I'm trying to shorten the audio file somehow.

What?
I used Mp3 here (http://www.alliancemusic.org/recordings.html)
I exported the .wav file which had been recorded into my computer as an Mp3 through After Effects.

Thanks for the tip animgrl, and nice website!
I checked into After Effects, and the $699 scared me off a bit.
I found some MP3 Splitter utilities that will do exactly what I need at: http://www.dailymp3.com/splitter.html

Well, I certainly wasn't suggesting buying After Effects just for Mp3 capabilites, I was just showing it was possible.
I'm glad you found something that worked for you.
Thanks about the site, DCElliott was a MAJOR contributor on it :)
