You forgot YaBB and YaBB SE .
I've had some experience with YabbSE and find that it is a great BBS.

vB is the best, unless you're after a free board in which case I'd go for Invision.

Currently the best one is vB, but phpBB and Invision are begining to look like a very good alternative for it, and both are free...

I have tried tons of different forum scripts made with PHP and mySQL, the best I have seen is Invision Power Board.
Its easy to use, easy to modify, etc.

I voted for phpBB, as it's probably the easiest to set up and use, from my experiences...
There's another one you can try at http://www.phorum.org . I couldn't get it to work on my site.. there were MySQL problems with it. Something about a table I'd just created not existing.. I'm not all that bright though, so user error happens to me a lot.
Also another one you can try is Snitz forums. ( http://forum.snitz.com/). It's an .asp based thing and less hosts support that than .php.. It doesn't seem to have a private messaging feature, though...
Yet another one you can try is XMB forums.. http://www.xmbforum.com/download/
I've only seen one site with it and there were bugs everywhere.. I think it's because the guy edited the wrong things in his configuration (things like logged in users would show at the bottom logged in all the time, etc...). But also that was an old old old version of it...

INIVISION BOARD!! I love Invision. vB just sucks...I dont like it. It has bad gfx and costs money. And phpBB is ok too...

phpBB - It looks nice, and doesn't have 200 features you never use.(vB) If you want customization, there are over 100 styles and 2000 modifications made to the software. Not to mention that it doesn't have crazy release cycles (UBB and IPB). I haven't use Hyperboard or Ikonboard, but it seems that Ikonboard was abandoned by the developers.
In the interest of full disclosure: I am a phpBB MOD Author :D

I ran 3 Invision boards. I have one left and that's only because it's never used. It has a couple of nice features, but not enough to justify how it didn't work for me. I switched over to phpBB for aything that has a database, and yaBB for anything requiring a flat file structure. phpBB definately gets my vote for the best of all time - and I'm not even a mod. Member of the forums, yes, but not a mod.
Considering what vB costs, I'd still go with phpBB. It handles large scale just as well and is very easy to customize and adapt to existing websites. I'm going to be adding one to my website at work soon as well.
