If the page you want to work on is online, go into 1st page and go file>> open file from the web.

Reading is a real good thing to do ;)

Start trying to get an idea for your site by looking at others for inspiration. Then think of how you could implement those concepts into your own site, and when you need help that's what we're here for. Find sites on the lines of your own for examples.

It's pretty much a matter of finding some ideas you want to use, and asking or researching for the answers.

Are you looking to get into css? There are many links I could post for you...

btw: you don't have to ****(star) out the word butt. ;) LOL

For example, you may want to start with
http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

which is a tutorial for HTML, the language that is used to construct web pages. 1st Page is a software that edits HTML files, but giving you more than a plain text editor like Notepad. So knowledge of HTML is required.

Then, you may wish to find a tutorial on CSS like
http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_intro.asp

CSS is a way to separate the appearance of your Web pages (sort of) from HTML to make your HTML web pages easier to maintain. 1st Page also supports CSS functions.

I think these two are adequate to keep you going for the time being.

Try downloading the zip file again, or download from a different site. Sounds like you may have got a corrupted file.

Here's a link to a download mirror site that worked for me:

1st Page 2000 Download (http://download.yohost.com/1stpage.htm)

Can you give us a more detailed account of what you did exactly?

Basically, if you already have an existing site, and it supports FTP, then you can use any FTP-enabled clients, like 1st Transfer, to download a copy of your web site. However, if you have a site online you ought to have your site saved somewhere on your disk already? Basically, when using 1st Page just make sure you open the files you would like to modify, and then save them and upload them to replace the original ones. Your new files need to have exactly the same name (and capitalization) in order to replace the old files. For example, on many web hosts index.htm and INDEX.HTM and InDeX.HtM are considered different files.

No i have never downloaded my site.....i am only now learning how to manage my site.....yes i know they should be the same, however through the trials & errors i think i've added and deleted info...

this is why i'm trying to learn, I have someone building me a new site, and this time around, i want to know how to manage it.

The people who did my site (1st site) just said here you go....and i had full ftp to the site....so i was left at thier mercy, never knowing how to even use ftp......

Another poor sole.......

Okay ... let me refer you to a page at a site I refer to frequently on another forum
http://io.spaceports.com/~wysardry/novice/index.htm

It covers in simple terms the basic ideas that you would need, such as Web page creation, saving, and uploading. Note that these pages are somehow specific to a certain Web host (Spaceports). However, most Web hosts are similar in sense you may still be helpful to you. I guess 90% of the content there would be applicable to you. Ask here again for clarifications if needed.

It describes WS-FTP LE instead of 1st Transfer as the FTP client, and uses Notepad instead of 1st Page 2000. However, the idea is the same. But you also wish to have the help files of 1st page around for cross-referencing though.

If I were you guys, I wouldn't use any sort of program just yet.

I like to make all my pages in notepad, and then compile them (save as a .htm). I have found that after 2 years of writing in notepad, It is much easier to find and correct my errors in a whole sea of syntax, even when it is nice colours etc!

Anyways, I advise you to start with smaller, less complicated pages until you are familiar with the code yourself

Or worse still, some people use MS Word to create Web pages and export them to HTML files.

After all, if some people find it convenient to do so, and don't care about conformance at all, then it's their choices, although, once using them, many people will start to think FP or DW is so easy to use and intuitive that they no longer have the tendency to at least learn some HTML. In my CS class, presumably with higher levels of computer literacy, still quite a lot of people do not try to learn HTML and are still using FP or DW to make their pages.

By the way, I started with Frontpage express too, but soon afterwards (also 5 years ago) I went hand-code and eventually got it ousted. I won't be aggressive enough to start with HTML as my first step too.
