Greetings!
Being that I have no experience whatsoever in building a web site, I was hoping for some suggestions as to how best to begin.
Please be gentle:)

Well it depends, for what are you going to use the site? (Homepage, Business, Fan-Page and the etc.)
This page will be for an online ww2 mmog squadron page...nothing serious.

Okey, more questions:
* Will you use graphics? (If yes, how much, lots or just few?)
* Will the website contain many pages?
* Will the website be static and rarely updated or it will be updated on a dayly/hourly base?
P.S. This is my 100th post :D
Yea, if you answer these q's it'll be much easier to help :D
Yes to the first two questions and to the third, I will updat probably monthly.
Btw...thanks guys for offering up some help:)

If you have absolutely no experience in HTML, then you may want to hit up Google.com for some HTML tutorials. It will provide you with the basic backgrounds for your website. Then go look at other websites pertaining to your game that you play. See what other people do to their websites. Heck, you could even right click and view their source to see how they did some stuff. Learning HTML is always easier if you see examples
Yea listen to Waves. I just gave in and bought hosting and learned html. I'm still not good though :(
Sounds good....I'm familiar with how to view the sources of other sites and many other particulars regarding websites.
Specifically, I need some advice as to what software you guys might recommend for me to begin with. Gos willing, time is on my side. Unlike a business site, ours is for fun and is currently built and up.
I just want to be able to tweak it and edit content.
Take a look at www.13thtas.com ....Some of the images are too large and load slowly...I basically want to revamp the site with a whole new look. I have a friend in Dallas which built this site...I'm going to take control of it, yet I'm not sure how to get what is on his puter moved to mine...I'm assuming, that the content is too large to email? Is this possible to email what he has so that I can just edit?
Hope I've made some sense here:)

I used the free html tutorial from http://www.pagetutor.com - I can recommend it for learning basic html, if I could learn, anyone can!
It includes some info on graphics, how to make them smaller and quicker, etc, too.
I also recommend 1st Page (wouldn't be here, otherwise, I suppose!)
http://www.w3schools.com can be useful sometimes.

If you want all the content that is on the site now, you just have to find out how your friend uplaoded it (web based, ftp) and download it from there. And it that doesn't work you could view each pages' source and download every image seperatly, which would be a pain.
About the graphics, may I suggest GIF images, they can be grainy, but the big one on the main page is anyway. Or if that isn't an option for you try saving the JPEGs at a low compression rate.
Thanks alot everyone!
I'll check back in as I discover just how painful this process truly is....perhaps I'm a natural and just don't know it? Yeah...that sounds good...I like that....I'm sure this will be just another easy conquest of mine.:)
Thanks again for your time and help...it's appreciated!

I learned basic html from the book HTML for the WWWeb, 4th Ed, by E. Castro. It was spelled out pretty easy. The rest has come little by little from forums like these.

I was hoping for some suggestions as to how best to begin :
We started with 1st Page 2000 to build the HTML & CSS.
Today we are very pleased we took that decision.
So our suggestion : Learn HTML & Cascading Style Sheets.
Good luck.

Hey Rude,
The easiest way to get the images off the site and all that is currently up, (in IE, of course) is to click on file>Save as, then make sure that in file type it says webpage complete and give it a path.
At this point you have downloaded to your 'puter all the pertinent info for the page. You can then edit the source in 1st Page 2000 and go to http://www.jpegoptimizer.com for jpeg compression. I try not to use GIFs as I don't like the 256 color limit, but there are GIF optimizers out there also.
As stated in one of the posts above, www.w3schools is an excellent place to learn HTML. They have try it before you write it pages!
You can also learn XML, CSS and more on their site. Don't get me wrong, they are not perfect (minor information missing) but you can pull up their site in the background and refer back and forth as your page develops.

I self-taught myself HTML by using this site:
http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/tut/index.html .
It's a site called Writing HTML and it was easy to
understand and really gave me a great start. From
there it is a matter of learning the different ways of
using the tags and adding XML, SHTML, DHTML and CSS.
I have bought TONS of books as references, but I have
found that The Complete Reference to HTML published by
McGraw Hill is the best. Also, if you go to
www.google.com and type in "HTML tutorials" you will
find a wealth of sites. Choose carefully. I can give
you a list of good sites if you want them, but try the
Writing HTML one first; I like it the best.
One other note: After you have learned the tags and
how to use them, you can learn even more simply by
studying the way other authors use them. If you see a
page that you like, try clicking on View | Source (or
Source Code)on your browser. You can then see the
HTML coding for that page (unless the author has
blocked it, which is unusual). Find the code that
applies to what you like about the page and study the
way they put it together.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions, let me
know, although I am far from an expert. I am a
part-time computer instructor so hopefully I can be of
some help.
If you have Yahoo Messenger (and you SHOULD! LOL) I
am BayAreaRed there. On AIM, I am TerrieInCA, and on
ICQ, my number is 8568671. I am usually not online
during weekdays as I work. But in the evenings and on
weekends, you can usually catch me sooner or later.
Good luck!!!
Terrie
