View Full Version : Links and Hosts

I've got two more questions! lol
Links- When I've needed to make a link, I've gone to "Anchor" to do so. Then, I type in the URL, but I leave the target, name, description, and statusbar blank. I figured I didn't need to fill those out...do I? Then, when I go to preview the page, it doesn't show anything that identifies it as being linked to another page of mine or another site...? Will the link work, once I've found a host and posted my pages on the internet, or am I doing something wrong?
Hosts- Can someone please tell me some good hosts to go to, to post my site? Also, just to check, that IS what I do, right? I find a site that hosts people, then I go to the file manager and upload my pages? I'm not really sure how that works, so if someone could please explain exactly what I'm supposed to do, it would be of much help to me!
Well, thanks a bunch!

I personally don't click any of the icons to make links.. I type the HTML code out.. You can probably safely leave those lines blank, but it will create a bit of extra unnessecary code, especially if you are making a lot of links. (edit: Didn't completely read your spiel on links... Don't know what the problem would be.. what is the code that 1st Page creates when you do that?) (Edit#2: I see what may be the problem.. Make sure you choose service at the top, and select World Wide Web, so that it creates an 'http://' at the beginning of the link... Maybe that helps?...)
About hosts.. My first host is http://www.angelfire.com. They are free, but you have to deal with a banner ad at the top of your screen. For five bucks a month they will get rid of it, but there's better options out there if you're willing to pay for a host.
Second option is http://www.bravepages.com . So far from what I've seen, they have the best deal for paying customers.
90% of the time, a host will have a way for you to upload stuff to them through your browser. I've only tried using 1st Page's transfer tool once, and was (very) unsuccessful.
The best FTP program I've found is SmartFTP ( http://www.smartftp.com/ ). It's free. It's verstile. It works. If you must use a program (which is almost nessecary if you have lots of stuff to upload) then that is probably the best one to use. Your host should have an FTP tutorial somewhere to tell you how to put in your username/password, etc...

A very simple and easy place to host you're website for a first time HTML-er is on 0catch (http://www.0catch.com)
It has browser upload, an easy to use file manager, and some other tools you might find usefull, they also offer some paid options which i do not know much about.
They do display a banner, but if you would prefer a popup, you can put in you HTML a <nobanner> tag. This will automatically force a popup. Only one though.
As for FTP, I found smartFTP a little hard to use, io think it was because i had already used 2 other programs that were similar to each other (interfaces and such) and whwen i tried smartFTP it was very different. Also i thought you had to pay... youk now, a free trial??
Anyway, IMHO, AceFTP is excellent, it's freeware, and it's also very easy to use. I would reccomend it to a new user. I use it.
Just to let you know, smartFTP seems to be the coice of most webmasters.
You can find many-a usefull file, including AceFTP 3 (freeware) at http://www.sitepronews.com/wapps.html
Hope i was of assistance. :)

For FTP programs I like AbsoluteFTP. VanDyke produces it at http://www.vandyke.com. It has a 30-day trial but I bought the full version - it's awesome. Windows Explorer like interface side by side, top / bottom, or however you want to put the windows.
