I am trying to set up a online family photo album. I would like each photo to be a separate web page - I plan on having an index page with thumbnails, each of which will link to a larger photo of the thumbnail. I have a lot of photos. My questions is, do I have to manually set up each individual photo page, or is there some way to set up a template with variables (where the variables would be the image and a caption), and then use a merge type function to generate all the individual photopages (kind of like you can do with a word processing program where you have a form letter, and merge the names and address of the recipients)?
Does this question make sense?:p

Your question makes perfect sense. :)
In order to do what you describe (the template with variables idea) you would probably need to use a server-side language like PHP or Perl. Someone has probably already written a script that would do the job. You might find something at Hotscripts (http://www.hotscripts.com) .
Hope that helps.

Searching the web, I came across a program called Web Album Generator (http://www.ornj.net/) , anyone familiar with it? Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, I loaded the web album generator but found that it was quite simple, plain and really not fit to easily deal with multiple picture albums, that would have been something I would have had to make myself.
And as you may know, you'll probably want to set up albums within your site to separate different events/holidays, etc. for easy accessibility.
I looked and looked and tried until I found one I really liked that a friend told me about.
Right now for a personal photo album I'm using The Coppermine Photo Gallery (http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/). It's easy to set up, categorize your pics, and super easy to upload pics. There are also interfaces you can download to make your Gallery look unique. I'd highly recommend it.
Instead of spending your time generating html and trying to organize those html pages into separate albums on a site of their own, you're organizing within an interface that makes it easy for you to update things. If you're interested in seeing how it looks, let me know and I'll pm you the link to mine.

There used to be a program called Albumatic, but I'm not sure it is still available.
I used it to put family pics and holiday pics on the net at one time.
Here is an example of someone else's use:

If you can get the program at all, it may be what you are looking for?
EDIT: I located the page and the product is discontinued - and no support. BUT I found I still had the zip file for the install, if you'd like to try it. You can d/l it from my site here (http://www.freewebs.com/cgjg/) by typing alb-200B.zip after the url when the page has loaded.
