What is a watermark and/or watermarking ????

It can help protect images a bit I've been told (thanks David) and I've seen it mentioned here and there in these forums but I haven't gathered yet what it consists of.

Sorry if I sound ignorant but :
I've never delt with images except for resizing and compressing them
My english vocabulary is certainly not up to date (anybody have a french translation ?)

Next time I'll google before questionning, promise !

Here is some information I found on www.watermarkingworld.org/intro.html :
watermarking is Imperceptible insertion of information into multimedia data
the french for it is filigranage (google translated the page for me)
first paper watermarking dates back to the 13th century !

And guess what ... the first painter to (try and) protect his works was French : Claude Lorrain in the 17th century !;)

There are a few programs out there that will allow insertion of a watermark.

Personally I am not impressed with the hidden watermarks or digital signatures. Images can still be used on printed material.

The simplest form of watermark is to put your web page address on the large images. Any image editing program that allows text will work.

Reducing the resolution to about 72dpi, which is fine for the net but not for printing also helps.

I like the Xat image optimiser from http://www.xat.com/ which allows you to insert semi transparent text (for your watermark) and allows you to optimise the image (Reduce resolution), but a good image editor will do the same.
