View Full Version : jpeg troubles
Hi!
I'm a newbie and have just uploaded my site to find that all of the pictures I edited in adobe (all small 10-60kb Jpeg files) simply do not load. I have used this website in the past with no problems but now that I am using a different server and html editor/ftp prog it doesn't seem to work anymore. Any ideas??????
Similar Jpegs created in Micografix windows draw seem to work but resaving them in this program has not helped?
I am using a program called "the HTML editor".
If you look at the index page on my site, www.cinematographyart.com there is the side bar missing, one link bar on the left (3 work fine) and the large picture on the right, however the title (created in windows draw) appears, as does the link (latest news) in the top right.
I would greatly appreciate any insight you may have as I am ready to pull my hair out. I simply cannot find any HTML errors or picture probs.
Thanks in advance
Gen:D
P.S. I have included the large pic which was intended to go on the front page so you can see if there is any prob with it.

I was very disapointed that I could not see any pics of her!!! I know that what you wrote was clear but I still could not make sense of it because you mention a large pic but I did not see any pics. I read what you mentioned about other things but do not know exactly what you have in mind so it is hard to decipher. However if you make sure that your jpegs are uploaded to the right folder on your server and they link correctlty I can not see a reason that you would have a problem. Just make sure that all paths are relative!!
Hi!
Thanks for your responses.
At first I thought they may not have been properly loaded too, and then tried again. The FTP program said they had been uploaded and I can even see them on my control panel for my web hosting service (they are in public_html). They simply do not appear on webspace. I am baffled. It is only the ones that I have used Adobe for.
I really can't understand why they are not there, unless I have a server problem??? They all loaded on the previous site without a hassle.
HELP!!!

There have been problems with javascript IE and photoshop. some type of bug where pictures fail to load. Nobody has quite tracked it down as yet.
Still this may not be the above problem as I type in the link to a picture directly, and even with the above bug the picture always shows. In this case it is not showing. Either not there, patyh is incorrect, or corrupted.http://www.cinematographyart.com/products/braveheartsml.jpg
So things to check -
1) Is the path as per above correct.
2) Using your Browser, open up the picture FROM your hard drive to see if it opens and is not corrupted.
3) Use another edit program and send to web site (if possible)
4) sheesh Did you know that approximately 13% of internet users do not have javascript turned on, and won't bother with sites that are nearly pure javascript - well they can't see anything anyway will they.
Why not put some pics on a plain html page, send to website to see if it works.
Hope that helps track down what the exact problem is.

Hi Day,
Thankyou for your response.
I was unaware of the javascript thing and may have to reconsider it in my site - thanks for the info
I have not uploaded most of the pictures as they do not appear to be loading and as such deleted the previous site and only re-uploaded the pics relevant for the first page on the site (as a test). Hence the reason Braveheart does not appear. The three missing are: bg_side.jpg vertigofrontpage.jpg and the on off products 2 files (can't remember their name..)
They all are readable from file and I have tried using a different program to save them in but they don't seem to work.
When I upload them to the site, then transfer them to the public_html file I get the following message
bg_side.JPG move /home/cinemart/public_html
Cannot move bg_side.JPG: /home/cinemart/public_html/bg_side.JPG already exists.
Apparently the hosting service thinks they exist even though you can't find them, should they be my next port of call?
It seems such a simple thing, but I just can't seem to get it right. I think I might try to send a plain HTML page to the site and see if all the pics load (great idea!)
Thank you again
Genevieve

I dont seem to have any missing images... but then I use Mozilla 1.5.
I at least see the large image you posted on the forum. If I am seeing all the images, then the problem is not with your code, but with some browser bug.
Hi All!
Thankyou for the responses and :joy: , I finally got the front page to work last night, that could explain why bytewizard couldn't see a problem. It seemd to be a culmination of a two things:
1. Adobe!!!!! Some files worked perfectly as soon as I resaved them in internet explorer or windows Draw - Thanks Day:D
2. Case sensitivity - Adobe saves files with a capital .JPG and this was causing some of my files to simply not get linked. I have never experienced case sensitivity with html before (but I guess I am dabbling way over my head) so I simply missed it:shy:
I think some of the upload issues have also been related to the ftp program I have been using as it often took repeated attempts to upload the same files - any suggestions on a good newbie friendly ftp program?
Thanks again for all your help

Case sensitivity, forgot to include that it happened to me before with a jpeg & Jpeg and none of my doing but caught it right away. As far as ftp goes I would use either ws_ftple free or use the trial. There were alot of folks recommending smartftp but I myself had troubles with it and posted it in the ftp but got no response. Connectivity issues, although all info was put in identical to the old faithful ws_ftple.
I just looked at it again and would use a margin of 10-15 pixels instead of having text jammed up against sidebar
Hi Mr Dawg,
Thanks for the recommendation, I'm about to look for ws_ftple on the net and see how I go.
A quick quessie on the margin - when I look at my site on the internet, there is adequate spacing and it looks good, I am using very high resolution and a 17 inch screen to view it. Are you using a different setup which makes the text appear crowded? So should I try and view it on different computers to see the variance? Or is there another reason for the margin? I really have very little knowledge when it comes to web stuff.
The other thing I just noticed is that on the product pages, the text often (but not always) loads and overlays the images a little. This is intermittent, but annoying, is there anyway to stop this? Sorry, I know you can't see this happening at the moment because the images are not loaded, but hopefully the info will be enough. Images are coming over the next few weeks - I've got 100 pieces to photograph and edit - uhhhhh...... My eyes are going to be looking like this by the time I'm finished.....
Oh, and if you really want to see Alyssa Milano, I'm happy to PM a copy of the 2 pieces I have with her in it - apparently great to drool over.
Have a great day!

Anything worth drooling over is worth viewing!!!
Change the res on your own screen you do not have to view it on other pc's
I have mine set at 800x 600 most the time and it is a flat panel sometimes I use the other 1024 x768 but it seems as though I always have to resise text especially if I am coding in html. It is easy enough to miss things at nomal text size. Viewing code at super small textsize is a pain.
PS viewed it again and there was a nice margin and did not change res so I do not know why the page rendered like it did ayer but is fine now!!!
