bitmap adjustment

Hi,
I have a premade logo that is in bitmap form. I want to be able to make the background transparent so that I can put the logo on a page with a dark background without a white box showing up around it. I have fireworks and I have photoshop. Fireworks I am very comfortable with but photoshop is brand new to me. Can anyone help?

Since it does not have many colors you can convert it to .gif format which has the ability to have transparent pixels. I don't have fireworks or photoshop so go into help and search for the word "transparent".

This might be tricky if you still want the specular light on the ring around the globe to be visible, as it is the same color as the background (white)
