I'm currently working on a new site that I think might look better with a black background, however I'm a little stuck on some of the details so I'm wondering if someone could point me towards a few well-designed sites with black backgrounds that I could take a look at.
Heh, well here's some that I know of, hope they can help:
Overclockers (http://www.overclockers.co.uk)
ModArchive (http://www.modarchive.com/)
Owtside (http://www.owtside.com/)
:) have fun browsing

This was a project for college that kind of fizzled out, but I think it looks alright.
(If you look around (not completed) you'll notice the backround on the other pages, as the site was going to be made using greyscale images, fast and graphical)

Mine should be in the bar above, or below, or in my profile..
It used to have a black background.... It kind of does now...
I actually made it with 1st page!

You might notice that none of the sites listed so far has a "true" black background; that is, the text is actually in black on a white or grey subset of the page.
The only white-on-black or grey-on-black page that I've ever seen done succesfully was www.hardocp.com, where the background mostly develops a style rather than a functionality.
What is the site? If the content would suggest a dark background, make sure you test it out in front of some people first. Otherwise, stick with the aesthetically pleasing.

I think my (unfinished) site looks pretty good. www.wblondon.com/telconstar99

Nice site, telecon, and an OK use of black. As noted before, you still used mostly black-on-grey text.
I would suggest either making the site compatible with 800x600 resolution screens, or adopting a free-form design.

Thanks for the compliment. However, I did design my site to work for the 8x6 resolution. In fact, I just checked it and sure enough, it doesn't break as long as your browser is maximized. What exactly do you mean by free-form design?

Hmm... I have to scroll to the left or right whenever I view your page at 800x600, even if the browser's maximized.
Freeform is any website which automatically fills the screen, like this forum. You can resize it, and it will adjust (the logo moves, the messages become bigger or smaller).

I prefer free form to fixed resolution sites personally.
How about evrsofts main page.duno if it's good or not.

Hmm, that's strange. What browser are you using?

telconstar - I just looked at your site, it's very nice, but it does look like it is slightly too wide for 8x6

A very nice site, Ganon. It could go far. Here's a few suggestions:
1. Increase the text size of your news. Just make it default or bigger. I've got 20/20 vision, and I shouldn't have to strain to see your text (as a rule of thumb, white-on-black requires bigger text).
2. Opera compatibility. The rollover links on the left don't turn off, the headings on the left jut too far out, and there's akward spacing in the top and bottom. Especially for a gaming or computer site, you will have viewers using Opera. Also, I've have never seen a page designed for Opera that didn't work flawlessly on any other browser (excepting DIVs and CSS in NS4, but you knew that)

Dynasty--I think I know what you are talking about. The white box holding the description is too small and yes, that is a bug that I need to fix, because it becomes a problem on the 800 x 600 resolution. However, you should not be seeing a scroll bar. Are you?

After checking it, no it fits fine without horizontal scrolls.

i downloaded all the popular browsers now (Mozilla and Opera). My layout looks identical in mozilla, but i see what you mean in opera. ill use php to give the user an alternate layout if they are using Opera (like get rid of the highlighting and making the borders line up better. ill increase the text size too, never really thought it was a problem but i do have 20/15 vision.

I just checked it with Mozilla (1.2 I think) and IE (5.5). I used an 800 by 600 resolution, and no scrollbars. Let's see now, I have 4 sections (Technology Skills, Customizing, Software Recomendations, and Miscellaneous Links) that determine the width of my page. They are 200px each, therefore it totals to 800px. That looks fine on mine. Are you still seeing that horizontal scrollbar EnwTheGood? I know Dynasty is not anymore (not sure why he was in the first place).

I am in Opera, but not in anything else.

Curse Opera! It does it for me to. I guess it refuses to scale my site. How strange.

That is a nice site, well the html version is, I'm not a fan of flash webpages. Possibly the gripe I have is the frames used but, it is pretty good otherwise.

Well, I'm not a huge fan of the design, however, it's certainly very creative. No, I would not design a site in flash, but since they did both, I guess it's ok. The only problem is when people don't have a clue what HTML or Flash is...other than that, I like the designer's creativity.

I don't mean to be completely condescending or anything, but:
Have you ever visited webpagesthatsuck.com? I think some of that guy's tips are just stupid, but he has a HUGE problem with what he calls "Mystery Meat Navigation", where you have to roll your mouse over each link to figure out what it is.
It may look cool, but I assure you that there are many people who will look at the page and ask, "Where are the links?"
