Do i have to build my site online or can i build on the hardrive first?

Any help greatly appreciated. :)

It depends, Jason. If it's a straight HTML page (or with JavaScript, CSS, Java, or other plugins) you can use the site entirely on the hard drive. I suggest creating a separate folder to store your site (which also makes uploading easier).

However, if you use any server-side scripting, such as PHP, Perl, SQL, or even server-side includes, you have to upload your website before the page will function. You can get around this by installing a mini-web-server on your computer, but this is pretty hard and kind of dangerous, so I recommend against it.

Good luck!

Does a Windows install of PHP4 support Apache 2? It's not mentioned in the docs.

I assume that an Apache install will work on Windows XP, since it's based on the 2000 core.

I'm now creating a site on my harddrive. I've opened a second file to use as another page on the site. How do i create a link to go to the second page?

I can do links for other sites and E-mails but i cant find anything on linking another page.

Thanks for any help.

That did it perfectly. Thanks.:)

If you dont mind me asking, how would you use that with a button rather than just the printed word?

Heh... I meant that Windows XP was based on the 2000 core, not Apache!

Jason, I would suggest a good basic HTML tutorial, but I don't know of any. Anybody got suggestions?

windows xp is based on windows nt. so win windows 2000.

core? do you mean the kernel?

What's the difference?

In my opinion, Win2000 was a big enough change so that it really isn't based on NT4.

Windows 2000 was based on the Windows NT 4 core, but with major revisions, Windows XP is based on the 2000 core, but again with revisions.

dont be silly. windows 2000 is based on nt.

oh and Dynasty, saying windows xp is based on windows 2000, isnt entirely incorrect but it is less correct than saying it is based on windows nt. ;)

Hey, I've been using Windows XP for two months now, and not ONCE has the computer frozen or a single program (even my stuff designed for Windows 3.0 that wouldn't work on '98) crashed.

Pretty good track record for a pretty well OC-ed and heavily used computer, IMHO.

Win XP only crahsed on me due to a nice overheating problem with my computer. But dispite that Windows .NET Server 2003 is even more stable, and I prefer it to XP.

ive been running xp corp sinse it got leaked a couple weeks before the official release. stability hasnt been a problem for me at all, except with the initial drivers for my ati card. that got cleared up within the first month or two.

Out of curiosity have you installed the recently released service pack on that XP Corp you have, and if so did it have any of the negative affects people said it would have on, less than legal versions :P

It just tells you to look the other way when it does that. :D

Try not switching your computer off at night (don't switch it off *at all*). You'll see wonders.

If you won't experience something bizzare after a week, I'll be surprised.
If you manage to run with no crashing or rebooting for 2 weeks, I will personally install XP on my machine. :p

My computer has been on for well over 2 weeks, and it hasn't been completely "off" for months (it was just in hibernation mode).

Addressing your original question: I like to create my pages offline and save them to my harddrive first. This way, it is like I have a backup incase my webhost goes down, and I lose all my pages. It is also nice to be able to work on your website while offline.

Well in my experience XP is crap. However I still would be happy to embrace it if SP1 makes it stink less. So I just gotta see around how it behaves with SP1.
