Web Hosting Directories- Are they helpful?

Hi guys,
I was wondering, how effective do you find web hosting directories? Do the new users really trust the rating of WHD for web hosting companies?. :order:

Most of the web hosting directories that I have found are filled with ads. In fact, they are simply a directory of ads with no real added value for the customer. My approach to building out a directory was to first conduct a study and then contact the leading hosts in their respective categories for advertising sponsorships.

Some hosts were reluctant to pay me for their services, but that's ok. I can always drop them later :p.
