I am doing a large site and the boss just informed me that he wants me to be able to change the menu content on a very regular basis. I know there is a way to make something like a stlye sheet for the menu but I am having trouble finding any references to this. Can anyone help? I dont want to have to rewrite the menu code on all 150+ pages every time the boss get a new idea... :smack:

Never mind this worked.
Some times it isn't a good idea to code when you are tired.

Thanks Mr. Stilts!

Why not try Sothink DHTMLMenu? It can generate menus in mintues. To change the menu content is very easy as well. Just re-create a js file, all your pages will be updated.

As someone who likes to browse with javascript turned off, I would lose the navigation entirely if it relied solely on that. (or force me to turn js on - and I hate being forced to do things!)

I would agree with Mr Stilts that the 'php include' way is probably the easiest and best (and it is cheaper than buying another tool).

While agreeing with dabbler, I would have to state that I'm not quite sure why one would turn off js? I use it, cuz sometimes that is only thing that will do what you need it to, however I don't overload it on a page. As for menus, I don't like Javascripting for menu creation. I have used it and don't care for all the things out there and you can never get it to work and place just how you like it. I have seen some nice effects with js on menus like buttons, but when you get right down to it, do you really need it? Why not use CSS buttons or linked text. That way you get everyone who has js turned off and on. :):) I'm trying to get int the php thing more for menus but don't have the timre right now.

BTW, dabbler, you still like the CSS Button creator? SoThink, nice punchline ad there!

Why not a Flash MENU that you can change by editing a text file ??

Mainly I turn off javascript because of the "toys" you mentioned. So many useless scripts!

I know it does stop some things, but usually nothing desperate. (although the navigation on a site submitted for critique on this forum was missing when I took a quick look.)

Yes, I still do like the css menu creator, although my time for web designing has been a little limited of late because of decorating my home! The end is in sight, though. Another problem is that the work on the home is affecting my health too. Not so good as I was.

Apologies too for going somewhat off-topic, but as I gave an answer in my first post, I do not feel exactly unjustified for this extension to the discussion.

Actually I did use a js on one site, but it added a (useful) functionality to the page, which still worked just fine without it. If viewers has js turned off they didn't miss anything, but the script gave an added dimension to those able to see it.

Nice and useful flash link there tmmoose...(bookmarked it) dabbler, thanks for the input :) I agree js should be used for functionality for those users that can use it. :)

Okay... this is like magic... the PHP solution is exactly what I was looking for and was about to post as a question before I found this thread...

Is there anything else I need to know as far as PHP goes to make this work, or is it really this simple? Also, does it slow anything down if I were to use this method for several elements on a page?

BTW Terminator, the new trailer is awesome and has me excited for the movie... and if Natalie Portman is in Indy, tell her "hi" for me...

@poodle, you might want to check into php tutorials a bit, it might save a few headaches in the long run. You can make a whole page in PHP and more. Just make sure all your includes are in order.

Side note: You mentioned Natalie, (yes, she in my eyes is my Firefox), anyway, the last celebration did have many many stars and this one will have more, however, she has never been to one as of yet. Ray Park, Chewie, R2D2, Carrie Fisher has been some of the biggest names.
