I have found the database at http://www.countrydatabase.dk very useful.

It only cost 15Euro which is a great alternativ to

http://www.assemblysys.com/dataServices/worldCities.php

Or you could make your own database, which would be free.

Note that the database on http://www.assemblysys.com/dataServices/worldCities.php is far more complete and detailed than the other one, and still reasonably priced, I think.
