Best way to lighten photo in PS 6?

I took many pics yesterday inside a penthouse in which the owner would not allow me to brighten the rooms well, and the photos turned out darker than I wanted. What is the best way to lighten images besides using curves & brightness? I have not been an extensive learner of PS 6 but do enjoy and love using it. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe the histogram might help. did your camera take raw pictures or jpg?
