Does anyone know if it's possible (or permissible) to modify or change the way your web site is listed on Google?

I have a fan site for singer Josh Groban. It focuses on people who have either never heard of him, or know little about him. My original intent was to name the site "Josh Who?" but I couldn't use the question mark in the URL (and without it the title just didn't work), so with a suggestion that viewers consider it Groban 101, I titled the site "Josh Groban 101." And I submitted it to the search engines. I checked with Google a little bit ago and found my site listed on the 2nd page. However, I had to type in "Josh Groban 101" in order to find it. Just typing in "Josh Groban" doesn't get it....or if it does, it's so far down in the rating that it didn't show up on the 20 pages I checked.

Since people are unlikely to type in the 101...I would like to do something to change it, but I don't know if that's allowed. Does anyone know how I might be able to do this? I've thought about changing the name of the site and re-submitting it (I don't really want to, but the site is worthless if nobody can find it.) This is the first time I've listed a site on the search engines and I've read that they're quite particular about how it's done.

The URL by the way, is:

http://josh-groban-101.home.mchsi.com/index.html

Any suggestions on how I might change it would be appreciated...and any information about how to do it would be helpful. Thank you.

Jules

You need to up the google pagerank to get it higher, to do that you have to optimise the site, doing things like making it XHTML/CSS and also by linking to high PR sites, if a googlebot goes from a PR10 site to yours your rank will go up.

Hey Jules
Have you thought about using simply his last name. If he's known by name and as his last name name is unique this should suffice.
You can also match that with the standard fair of keywords such as shows bookings cd's bio etc.

lol PR10, those links are impossible to get unless you literally have millions of dollars to spend. And terminator, meta tags don't matter anymore, at least not to Google.

Site submission to search engines and directories is often done incorrectly. In order to get the best results from search engine and directory submissions, Swift Media UK offers the following web site submission tips:

Treat search engine submission and directory submissions separately

Most people incorrectly believe that search engines and directories are the same. A search engine uses a program that searches documents (i.e. web pages, which are mostly HTML documents) for specified keywords and returns the list of documents. A search engine has two parts, a spider and an indexer. The spider is the program that fetches the documents, and the indexer reads the documents and creates an index or database based on the words or ideas contained in each document.

A directory (such as Yahoo, commonly mistaken for a search engine) depends on people for listings. The main difference between a search engine and a directory is that a directory does not make use of a spider or robot. In other words, a directory will not list your web page if you do not register it with them. Directories are usually divided into categories and you must submit your URL under the most appropriate categories.

Search engines vary which HTML tags to emphasize: titles, meta-tags, alternative text, body text, headings, etc. Directories primarily emphasize titles, the description you submit to them and the category or categories you select in the directories.

Because search engines and directories are so different, it is best to develop your submission strategies separately.

Search engine submission strategies

To get optimal listings in search engine and directory queries, keywords and key concepts must be placed strategically throughout your web pages. To summarize, you need these words and phrases in: Titles, Meta Tags, Alt-attribute, headings, main body text.

Other factors that affect search engine rankings are HTML layout, keyword density, keyword prominence, and keyword placement. These topics are covered in detail at Copywriting for web sites, Search Engines, Directories and Web Design, Search Engine, and Marketing Considerations.

Submit individual web pages to search engines. Submit your home page to the major directories

In general, we like to submit 5-7 web pages at a time to the major search engines to avoid a spam penalty. Additionally, we do not recommend that you submit the same web pages to the search engines within a short time period (even if you made changes on them).

We recommend that you first get your main URL (yourcompanyname.com) accepted into a directory before you try to get more targeted pages listed. You will stand a better chance of getting multiple pages listed in a directory if your overall site has been accepted first.

The time between site submission and addition to the search engine or directory database is called the lead time. You will not see results in your traffic logs until the lead time has passed.

Monitor results on site reporting software

We are firm believers in using quality site statistics software. In fact, we do not believe that anyone can have a successful online business without it. Our two favourites are WebTrends and Webalizer.

You will be able to see the results of your search engine optimization and link development strategies in your site statistics. You can measure the keywords used, the URL's giving you the most referrals, the type of browsers used to view your site, the time of day your site is accessed, and so forth. All of this data will give you a clearer profile of your site's visitors.

Then, based on this data, you can tweak the HTML, graphics, and content to best suit your customers.

Submit and resubmit web pages as necessary

An online business that uses search engine optimization as a marketing strategy will use this submission, monitoring, and tweaking practice. Site submission is a never ending, ongoing process because search engines constantly change their relevancy algorithms.

We recommend that you resubmit a web page to a search engine only when there is a significant change to web page or if a page has dropped from the index. (Changing a meta-tag description does not constitute a significant change.)

To see if your web pages have been added or deleted from a search engine, go to each of the search engines listed below and type in the string listed below the search engine name. Replace "companyname.com" with your URL (web site address)...

AltaVista
url removed

Google

HotBot (which uses Inktomi)

domain:

Fast Search

url removed

If your web site has been accepted into a directory, you can then submit specialized pages within your web site to other directory categories. Once your site has been added to a directory, you should not have to resubmit it unless your business has significantly changed and you belong in a different category.

Search engine optimizer (SEO), usually a good SEO firm provides useful services to its web customers. Services like site architecture, a good site design, find relevant directories to which a site can be submitted, site compatibility to its viewer and to search engines. How ever there are unethical practices as well followed by few unethical SEO’s , giving a bad name to the industry by doing aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to unfairly manipulate search engine results.

There are though good SEO companies that will improve your site and also will improve your chances from being dropped from search engine results altogether. Not only a good SEO will structure your site systematically but as well structure promotions and practices for better results and ethical practices. To know more about ethical practices, google provides ethical guidelines for webmaster to perform.

No SEO Company or individual can guarantee you a #1 ranking on Google, yahoo, msn or any other Search Engine (SE), similarly MGT’s whole purpose to this site is spreading awareness and information on best practices to be performed by any SEO or a fresh start-up Web Companies. A ethical SEO never sends spam mails guaranting you #1 position at any SE. If one does, ask for references who can tell you the facts, ask for more of their success stories, if still not satisfied find out more from any Search Engine about the company by simply typing the name of the domain or a companies name, ask more people with common references about the company. Do the process over and over again till you are really satisfied by the companies profile, cause if you fail to choose a right company your domain and the companies name may be removed entirely from by major SE’s directories. If you are still interested to know more, you can Learn Search Engine Optimization Today.Again as said earlier a good SEO will always provide valid reasoning for any optimization process before they begin.

A ethical SEO never unethically submits your site to 100’s of search engines promising you more web traffic. Believe us (because we have done this ages ago as a mistake) they are useless practices and not worth a time. You may see the traffic results higher in the traffic analyzer for a day or so but you will also see it fall back very soon. There are no results from one or 2 day traffic rising in peak.

Web traffics are permanent traffics that you see in your control panel or any other web analyzer reports. They show you daily traffic but the accumulation is based on weeks and months. Web Advertising is another way for more web traffic, but not a SEO process. Advertising in Google Ad words and Yahoo Overture and others is simply getting sponsored for keywords you choose and pay per click process, nothing more.

A ethical SEO firm shall carry out process such as spam abuse alerts and report it to respective SE's complaint forum. An ethical SEO never spasm offline or online.

To make sure what you pay is what you get always ask for a refund option at the start of the project. A good SEO company will always promise and obey the ethical norms for client's satisfaction. A full and unconditional money-back should be guaranteed. Increase website traffic with URL removed

A firm believe in an SEO company is a must and it only comes when you get desired results. But do not be faked at times by companies who perform un-ethical jobs like performing doorway pages. Usually doorway pages contain hidden keywords directing to other clients domains of the SEO Company. Keep a constant check on your keywords and links on each page. These pages can drain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.

Always go for a Written Contract following the ethical SEO guidelines to Increase Website Traffic. For Ethical SEO guidelines please refer to : http://www.google.com/webmasters/seo.html
