This post was extensively changed on February 11, 2006. Most of the details about program crashes that were orignally in this post are deleted because my present focus is on fixes, not describing problems. I appreciate the responses that have appeared in this thread.

The last version out of FP2006 final was released on January 12. Two days earlier, a significant update of FP was released. If you downloaded FP2006 final after January 12, you should have the latest release. If you caught the wave on the day or the day after the January 10 release and announcement, you would have downloaded the earlier version.

Here is what I think distinguishes the earlier version from FP2006 final, also known as FP 3.0: With the earlier version I think you will get the following:

Splash screen saus the program expires sometime around April
No Nag Screen.

That version of the program, according to Admin in an edit to his January 10 release post, is not as good as the January 12 release.

Note: The latest update was posted 12/JAN/2006 @ 1.12PM AEST.
If you downloaded a preview release, you may want to come back and download the final version. The final version include some additional tweaks and functionality.
The announcement post is here,http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?postid=23167#poststop

When people ask for help with the January 12 release, they may be reporting issues that folks still using the January 10 release do not get. The latest release may have some bugs that are not reported by January 10 release users. The opposite could also be true.

The Nag Screen begins appearing later on, not when the program is first used.

The original post, following, dealt with DEP errors. The emphasis could better have been on the bug, program crashes on exit. Procedures have been tried out that seem to deal with that bug and the bug Splash Screen hangs on program start, and a bug that FP process does not shut down when the user "exits" the program. The last bug may be a cause of complaints that FP2006 final uses too many resources or memory.

For information on Data Execution Protection, how I found out that DEP is my friend and for information on how to turn DEP on, gp here,
http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?p=23626#post23626 [/url]

By default, Windows XP may have DEP protection for programs other then Microsoft programs turned off. If DEP is on and a program causes a DEP report window to open, DEP at that time closes the program. This does not mean that it is a good idea to turn DEP off for the program. If it is off information is lost, the program may crash anyway, and program behavior that will otherwise generate DEP reports may be dangerous.

Yesterday I started using FP2006 (final) to write some HTML, after first setting up options, preferences, and my internal and external browsers. Sometime during all this I became aware that the program was not crashing anymore. Something had "solved" this problem, but what was it?

The rest of this story plus specific things to try for (1) "hung Splash Screen", and (2) at least one kind of program crash are posted here:

admin, the rest of this post is written for you. One of two things seem to happen when a person starts trying out FP2006. One group of folks encounter crash behavior and other strange things at the beginning and seem to give up and leave. (If so, I am an exception. I was determined to figure out why many users say they are not having problems.) The other group of folks may already be familiar with the interface from using FP2000 or Homesite. They may immediately do some configuration steps and start using the program. In the course of doing those configuration steps, I think they have "corrected" something. This is what happened to me. For the folks in the second group, FP2006 generally seems to work. I think information in the linked post may point you to the cause of the crash behavior. Please read it and see. It will help evrsoft to correct these things that are stopping some users before they can begin.

I just downloaded FP2006. When I try to run it, it hangs up at "Loading Code Tree..." Why is that and how do I get beyond it?

This paragraph is added as an edit, howgar, I hope you see it. According to some, a clean reload works. It has to be clean, though. Read the linked post for information on how to do a clean reload of FP2006, http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4550 You may want to create a system restore point first. However, as FP is not working for you now, the clean reload should not be something you need to undo. Post what happens to this thread, or the linked one. I would like to know how well this works for people. If the clean reload does not work, after you post and let me know that, you can proceed to try the suggestions below. The clean reload if it works is better and easier than trying the following so do that first.

[This paragraph is added in a newer edit.] This post, http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?postid=23614#poststop
by ANDREW_H, is detailed steps to fix the problem you reported. His solution should be tried before looking into what I wrote below. I just read all the more recent posts ANDREW_H. I recommend others read them.

Even though the "Splash Screen" appears hung, check and see if you can open the File tab and open some kind of htm document, perhaps by using the Start Manager. If you try the Start Manager, if the window opens but there are no files to select, then the template files are probably missing from the programs sub-directory, named Templates. This directory is immediately under the program directory. If the template files are not there there, then FP2006 cannot get to first base.

have never had the "Splash Screen hang" when the template files are present. If you cannot open a file with FP2006, use Windows Explorer to see If the template files are there. If they are missing let me know.

If FP2006 can open a file, i.e., if you can get to the configuration menus of the program, there are some things you can do that may get you going. We can go there if this turns out to be the case.

I just wanted to note that I too had the "Loading Code Tree" error. The way I fixed it was by uninstalling the program, then I also had to manually remove the "Evrsoft First Page 2006" folder in my Program Files directory, because it still had some files in it (.ini and others). When I ran the install again it worked perfectly.

I realize now that the "Evrsoft First Page 2006" folder had already been there before I installed...because I had installed the last beta version of the program. Perhaps this is what was causing the loading error.

yes as it states, admin stated to remove all traces of beta before installing final version, glad you worked it out.

That suggestion is part of a multi-step process for solving several bugs that is still being evaluated by a couple of users. The process seems to have worked for hung screens, and a couple of other reported FP 2006 final bugs. These bugs include the following:

Leaves FP process open after every close, this is cumulative. This is surmised to relate to the reports that it uses too much resources or memory.
Hangs on starting while Splash Screen is still displayed.
Crashes on close.
