View Full Version : I'm very disappointed with this release

I used FirstPage 2000 for many years because I felt it was the best editor that had a low footprint on the system. It was quick and gave me a lot of space to type in. I was really looking forward to a new release of FP and I find that I am horribly disappointed with it.
The interface is pleasing - a nice update and everything is still where I expect to find it. That's the only positive thing that I can say about it.
Typing in the editing window is laggy and slow. I type about 50wpm in text and maybe half that when coding in tags. I don't want to sit and wait for my editor to catch up with me.
I am also disappointed in the inclusion of a WYSIWYG window. I think there are enough editors for newbies - I believe that Windows ships with Frontpage or something - and I am saddened to see that EvrSoft has compromised product performance for acceptance by the newbie market. The first thing that I did was to turn off this window, but it hasn't improved the performance of my editing window.
The program crashes frequently - something that FP2000 never did.
The program takes *forever* to load. More annoyingly the splash screen is set to be "always on top" so it's impossible to try to continue working while I wait for the editor to load up :grrrr:
For me it's back to FP2000, stable, fast, and only with the features I actually need.

I am not sure I agree with you on a few points. In my opinion having a feature-rich environment was the point of the releases as a whole. If you want something simple with syntax highlighting then notepad++, notepad2, Kate etc are the already dominant, so there is no need for another low-spec addition.
I agree from when I tried it before moving to Linux that it was slow, so I can't fault you there, but as to the splash screen has a fix if you read the forums.

What PC setup and version of Windows are you running?

I have to agree with pd85 on this one......to get those type of features that one needs and would expect, it is a load on a system. Look at dreamweaver 8, it loads slow but I'm not sure on the slow typing. I also type fast, so fast sometimes that my thoughts cannot keep up :), but there may be other issues. Also, this is a BETA version, soo....please give admin your specs and see if he can improve on it :)

I'm hardly a newbie (I've been coding web pages since 1999) and I rather like the wysiwyg window. It's also very helpful for the ladies who volunteer at my church office, because they are newbies (heck newbie doesn't even describe how out of their element they are when it comes to computers) and I can have them help me update the web site without scaring them into catatonic states of shock.
I haven't noticed any keystroke lag on either of the computers I use, and usually I have my image editing program (Corel and/or Adobe), several browser windows, my e-mail client, occasionally Flash, MS Word (and the odd Freecell game) all open at the same time. I haven't had a crash yet, either.
The only bug I've had pop up is when I goofed up a JavaScript. Aparently the "turn of Javascript" button persisted until I restarted 1st Page. But that's a post for a different topic (i'll do some more testing before posting a bug report).

I have to concur, I have had serious problems with First Page 2006. I get the same lag when I type, and the program in general is very buggy and crashes frequently. I have had to stick with 2000 because 2006 just doesn't run.
I didn't have these issues with the preview release, so I'm not sure what is going on. I have installed 2006 on several PCs, and they all give me the same results.
The UI response time is very slow - especially for 3GHz (1 GB ram) machines that aren't running anything else (besides Windows)!

Well this is still a preview release....so all one can do atm is to give admin details so when the final version comes out, there will be no bugs..

I haven't had any problems with crashing, but I have had a huge delay with typing in most cases.
Currently running on:
XP Home Edition
768 MB PC2100 DDR
ASUS mobo
nvidia geforce 5600 FX gpu
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Besides the text problems, I love the program (currently found and downloaded FP2k as a temporary substitution). My internet/web teacher will be thrilled to see a free program like this outside of the school's frontpage copies (which she hates).

For those that are not crashing.... Try this please and see if you can duplicate the crash I constanlty and effortlessly get over and over....
Open FP2006, then open up one of your files/pages to edit.
Now open up another file/page to edit. Do Not Close the previous one. In other words open two or more pages for editing.
Now... go back and forth from one page/file to the other... if all goes as planned... your copy should freeze like mine does. If not... I want to know all the what, why, and how.
This too happens on 3 different machines that I have.
1. Windows XP Pro, Pentium 4 CPU 2.4GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM IBM NetVista Machine M42
2. Windows XP Pro, Pentium 4 CPU 2.8GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM Dell 9100 Laptop
3. Windows XP Pro, AMD Athlon (forgot off hand exact) Its the one that runs equiv - 2.8GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
To me it looks like a pattern with XP Pro.

Yup, the package seems great, BUT I'm having a majore lagging when typing some normal text between the tags. Typing the tags goes fine thou. weird.
Any fix for this?

Trezore, Firstpage 2006 appears to be *very* buggy for me, frequently crashing, leaving unclosed processes upon exit, and having the awful type-lag other users have reported. But I cannot reproduced your problem. I run XP tablet edition, SP2.

Okay people lets make sure when posting that FirstPage 2006 is a pre-release and known to have bugs, this is not an official release and of course give admin time to work out the bugs reported.
I may enter an annoucement about this. Admin stated around April will be the official release.

:eyebrow:
Not that I am an expert or anything but do you suppose that some of these problems that you all are experenceing are due to a bad download? I downloaded 2006 and except for the lag in the typing I am not having any of the problems that you all are having. Now for the fun part I am running it on an old Dell GX-1 450, with windows 98 and only 128 memory. go figure. :weee:

I can repeat the problem I am having too. I am running XP (home). When I do something as simple as just open FP2006 (final)* and then close it I get a DEP event. For details read this post http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4495 in the "bug reports forum".
For information on Data Execution Protection, how I found out that DEP is my friend and for information on how to turn DEP on, read this post http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?p=23626#post23626 [/url] By default, Windows XP may have DEP protection for programs other then Microsoft programs turned off.
If you are getting crashes, hangs and other peculiar behavior with FP2006 (final), turn on DEP and see if you get DEP reports. When the DEP report window opens, the program closes. Some turn off DEP to avoid this. I have learned that DEP is my friend, so I keep it on for all programs.

I have a new post (http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showpost.php?p=23673&postcount=4) about final now, I was or felt mislead since last by admin would state this was gonna be final around April and the Splash register screen stated so also on PR2 canidate. It would be nice to find the thread or screenshot of that, but I may be wrong. Thank you Galactic for the kind words.
So many ppl have asked Admin to change a bit on the forum and have made excellent suggestions.
I have contacted DCElliott to tell him that I'm no longer moderating any FirstPage items since IMO Admin should be in control of that and since I just volunteer and hes making money with First page that I should not interfere where it could jeopardize my own forum and or business. I have mixed feelings right now and will leave it at that.
Again thank you for the kind words, I try to do a job, even as a volunteer, that is difficult and time consuming at times, that will not tick anyone off. Without order to the boards, I feel I cannot do a job where one does not communicate to even its volunteers. Also as a side note....I guess the forum did not receive a final notice as it did for Both betas and thus aiding in my thinking that Final was not out yet. I'm trying to reproduce many of the bugs listed on my own time and many issues I think are related to other software or configurations on other PC's some I cannot reproduce and others I can like crashes. Anyway, thanks again :)
