View Full Version : Crashes, & Processes that do not end???

I am experiencing some of the crashes discussed in various threads here. I attempted to do a reinstall as explained in one thread and discovered something a bit odd. After doing the uninstall, I attempted to delete the directory for the application with all its contents and discovered some of the files would not delete. They were considered in use though 1st Page had been closed.
On opening the task manager I discovered 5 instances of 1stpage.exe processes open on the Process Tab. So, I closed these and proceeded to finish deleting the directory which now went fine.
After the reinstall, I started the app, then shut it down. The program crashed when attempting to shut it down. I checked the task manager and noted one 1stpage.exe process on the Process Tab. I started and exited 1st Page 3 more times without any crashes, but upon checking Task Manager I noted four instances of 1stpage active on the Process Tab. As a note, each active process consumes about 26Mbytes of memory.
This hardly seems correct. Anyone else see this, and if so, any suggestions???
THanks!
John

Your first post is interesting and well written.
On my PC, even when FP2006 final terminated on my PC with error messages, it did not leave running processes. I have not seen leaving processes behind mentioned before on the forums. I agree with you, the program should not close and leave open processes.
Please answer these questions:
Are you running FP2006 final?
I think the program has been out less than a month.
Please describe your system:
What Windows version do you have?
Does it have all service packs and updates installed?
How much RAM does your PC have?
How do you keep your system free of scumware?
Has your system been scanned recently for scumware and viruses.?
Anything else you think is relvant about your system?
If there is any question at all if your PC is clean of scumware, go to
http:www.spywarewarrior.org
to get some help with that.
FYI: I have not seen anyone say that FP2006 final can run under a Windows version earlier than Windows 98SE.
Up until now, are you seeing a Nag Screen when FP opens? Are you seeing a Nag Screen when FP closes?
Turn off your computer and restart it. After you restart it do not run FP.
Look at the processes that are running. You might want to write them down, or copy and print them out if you can. Be sure that no FP page processes are running.

Follow all the removal steps he describes.. (At this point the only one I am not sure is required is step 4, but just do all 4 of them, it will save time.)
Reload the program.
Start the program.
Did you see a Nag Screen before the main program opened?
After the program opens, load a template into tthe program. You can do that from the File tab and use start manager or select default template.
Close the template.
Exit the program.
Did the program close without errors?
In the light of your own discovery, open the process manager and see if there are still any FP processes running. If there are, we have not made any progress. If there are not any, it would be a good sign.
Are there FP processes still present?
After you respond with these answers and results. We will go from there.
When you are ready to start preparing a response, from this post, click on the quote reply, remove the quote tags from the text entry window, add lines as desired and you will have a "form" you can type the answers into.
Good luck. I look forward to learning what happens.

Your first post is interesting and well written. THANKS
Are you running FP2006 final?
YES - I originally downloaded it about 5-7 days ago, then redownloaded it and installed from the new download just before posting this message!
What Windows version do you have?
I am running Windows XP Pro on an Athlon 2600 w/1 Gig ram. All Service Packs and updates are current. I run "Advanced System Optomizer", Anti Virus, and Spybot Regularly (And have done so during this process) so I doubt (Never say never) these are issues.
Up until now, are you seeing a Nag Screen when FP opens? Are you seeing a Nag Screen when FP closes?
I see the loading screen, but it goes away and does not stick on the screen. I never see it when closing. I have though disabled it as described. This did not affect my issues.

NO - The process is not there after a reboot.

I did this 3 times with the exception that I used "Advanced System Optomizer" to clean the registry.

YES

NO - It did error.

YES - One copy of the process is open. In addition, if I enter the app and close it again, I will then have two. Etc. etc. etc. I have attached a screen shot for your reference.
Now, I have installed this app on two other computers. My main PC is the only one that seems to have the "Process staying open issue". However, on all 3 PC's, when the program is close after the initial opening, it crashes with an error. One machine has tended to crash with an error about every 10-15 minutes. The other I just installed, then reinstalled (As per the about mentioned instructions) for the first time a few minutes ago. I will play a bit and see what it does.
I hope this is clear?????? Thanks for whatever assistance you can offer in advance!

Thanks for a complete response. It was very clear.
You are having a problem I have not seen and by your own observation it is compuer system specific. I hope someone with more knowledge of systems and this application will see something that will work around this. I regret that after you did all those things that I suggested to you that I am out of suggestions. Maybe no other difficulties will be caused if you always use process manager to close the program after you close the program. No other difficulties beyond having to do all that.
The first screen you mention is the program Splash Screen, it is not the Nag Screen. The Nag Screen has to be closed, after 5 seconds, before the FP final application actually starts. The Splash Screen can be turned off in the menus. The Nag Screen starts appearing, at least to some of us but only after we have used the program for a while. It appears on program start and program close.
The following question is not about solving the bug you are reporting but is something I have been trying to find out about FP final. After your clean reload, was it the Splash Screen or the Nag Screen that you saw? Send me a Private Message to answer this if you are not going to write a reply post. (To send me a PM , left click on my name beside this post and click on send a Private Message to Galactic.)
Questions for all FP final users:
Have you checked your process manager window? Do you get instances of FP final remaining an open process after you close the FP final program?
Notice, the bug reported here appears whether or not the crash on close bug occurrs. It also persists through a clean remove and reload of the program. It is system dependent.

I liked FirstPage 2006. However, it keeps crashing on my desktop with memory access violation. it happens very frequently.
Does anyone have similar problems?
Thanks,
Clouds....

Been reported in last year that bugs are still there and memory issues. Yes its known, just not sure if anyone is doing anything about it. For one, a paid commercial product like FP2006 should be fixed
