search forums is part of vbulletins code and is written in PHP.
You might want to look into sphider which is written and all you need to do is implement it into your site. However its a bit more advanced.
Are you wanting to just search your site etc or specific are like forums? Have you looked into googles search api?

You can as Term said, include Googles search into your site with a simple text box, and a hidden input of " site:yoursite.com" to go at the end of the search.
You can do it fairly easily with PHP if you are searching something powered by MySQL. If you want to search the pages then it is a tad more difficult.

That is why I mentioned sphider....it searches everything :) and also crawls other site, basically is a spider that searches your own site and displays results kinda like search engines and its FREE ! :), they have done some nice work. However its a bit more advanced that just simply installing
