When creating a html-based website with Firstpage 2006 and saving it to your harddrive, afterwards I wanted to try open it with notepad.

That's when I noticed that when you open it in notepad he puts everything in one line instead of nicely underneath each other, like you work with in the program itself.

Is this a bug or a setting that must be adapted?
Because I'd also like to use notepad to check on my HTML-scripts

thanks in advance

Just dump first page and go for another HTML editor. The newest version will not satisfy your needs.

I would also recommend using another editor, there are some about that you could put on a pen drive and use at school (like notepad2), which would be more useful to you if you actually want to learn how to write good code.

As to what's going on in Frontpage, I couldn't say. It would be an odd bug if it just randomly decided to ignore \n and \r's

agreed, if you are using this editor for school setting, there is better or cheap ones out there that are more bug free.

It sounds like you may have activated the HTML Compressor.
