The usual rule-of-thumb is 70-100 characters, including spaces. I've not seen this tested for or any evidence longer titles rank lower.
Each SE has a limit on text it displays. I think Google is like 83-85 and Yahoo around 110 or so.

Hi,
It is best for you to limit the words in your title, i think 4-5 word is optimal, with a maximum of 7-8 words.
It's best to stay at around 70 characters.

You can put 50 words in Title Tag. You can add 126 characters but only 86 will be displayed in tool tip.

Title should be maximum in 80 characters, Description should be maximum 150 characters and keywords 250 characters.

I've heard that it would be ideal if you limit your title to maximum of 80 characters. Otherwise, Google will drop other words or characters included in your title.

The title tag is the meta tag located at the top of page and contains highly searched relevant keywords. The limit of characters for the title tag is of 70.

I have found that using 65 characters gets me a higher ctr when I'm not the first result. Just my two cents though. The best way to find out for sure is to just try though.

Is better to use 70 characters with primary keywords.

I think you can use 65 character in Meta title. Basically, google don't show more then 65 character in search result.
