Scare the grannies and the already terrified!!!

Jesus man! How much is your reputation being crippled by this 6 buttons from hell virus stuff.

My wife is starting at college and was recommended by Hope University, Liverpool to download 1st page from its (Hope's) website.

Installed and guess what ...

Inoculate IT pops up saying virus found. Myself being a computer professional was just about to email Hope tech support to tear a strip off them when I counted to ten, took a deep breath and investigated further.

I CANNOT BELIEVE you guys would release a program *STILL* that has (or what AV progs tell their users is) a virus !

YEAH YEAH YEAH you can bang on about it *NOT* being a virus but the grannies, terrified, newcomers to PCs and IT studies students may not know that, all they would know is to tell their friends to NOT use your product as it has a virus.

I don't know why I am trying to help you to get your act together ... many people seem to have tried beforehand in the forums and failed to get it though to you.

I don't normally grumble to people about things ... I just let them ride ... but THIS needs sorting.

But hey, just ignore this post or reply saying its not a virus.

I will be informing Hope University of this with a recommendation that they update the CAB file which has the *VIRUS*, replacing it with something else ... probably "six buttons from heaven ..." with flowers on !

Also ...

The Computer Misuse Act ... maybe its a grey area, but if it is recognized as a virus ("Trojan.Annoying") ... then by offering it for release ... are YOU breaking the law ... ?

Just a thought ...

What would happen if ... a student spent 5 hours writing an essay, then clicked on one of the six buttons from hell using up memory and crashing his / her word processor coz it has no memory to save!

'nuff said.

Computer: I will hurt you, are you sure? Y/N?
User: Y
Computer: Okay
User: Bastard....

Point is, the person would have to be really stupid not to take the warning seriously. I'm sure it will be removed in the next version.

I work with (support) a *lot* of I.T. ( I wont say Dumb ;) ) illiterate people at my place of work (NHS Hospital) ... over 4000 people in fact ... all who have can have access to a computer and use it, but most ask "where is the ANY key"?!

As for students, yes, they are dumb! - Have I just insulted my wife? YES! ... Why change old habits ;)

But at the end of the day, it is EVRSOFTs product which has the reputation to uphold, not the students.

Otherwise ... 1st page is quite good! :smoking:

The words "It's not a virus" were directed to the people inside this forum.

Surely EvrSOFT didn't think trough the whole idea when they included such script among with the rest IScripts, but I'm sure that at the moment the program was released, this script wasn't defined as a virus.

Also, why are you telling us it? We are fully aware of how dumb EvrSOFT for not recompiling the dist. and leaving this script out of the build, but we're not EvrSOFT team, we're just bunch of people who write in this forum, even me and dbindel, both of us moderators, but none of us works for EvrSOFT, we work for the people in this forum.

I had in mind to recomplie the dist. myself, but I quit this idea very fast, you see, this will be breaking the copyright of FP, if FP was open source, then I could have done it w/o breaking the copyright, but it's not, so I can't do it.

I just hope that someone from EvrSOFT dev. team will see this thread, and will make the needed changes.

I am sure the developers (and managers) read the forums. If not, then they would be *really* dumb because this is where the REAL feedback comes from for their products. If I send them an email it would probably either a) go unread or not replied to or b) put to one side with probably the thousands of others who emailed them with the same issue.

My post could be construed as a petition in EVRSOFTs back yard to get it resolved and for others to reply to saying "Yeah EVRSOFT, get it sorted!"

A professional product of this quality should not have "Six buttons from hell" ... IMHO.

Quit complaining. You got this product for free. If you wanted a company to listen to your complaining about insignificant details which don't really affect the final quality of a product, you'd have to pay for the product first.

Be grateful with what you get for free, and be glad that people are actually still developing a product for ingrates like you.

Nah, I disagree, when you make a product, and you ship it for free, it doesn't mean you're not responsible for it's quality.
I think that EvrSOFT's goal is to make people love it's products in order to be able to ship them for money in the future.
If this is their goal, they Must take care about the product, must listen to suggestions/bug reports/complaints, and the most important, they must act according to the feedbacks.

I agree with that, but feedback and flaming are two different things.

Next time you have a suggestion, Karma , please try and be more respectful.

Boris seems to have grabbed my position - cheers mate.

Zero Angel ... forget it!

- Respectful! HA !

Well let talk about respect. (Apart from the fact I was coding before you were even born! - but I wont go into that)! The university recommended that 1st Page be installed on my PC. So, I installed it.

Installing a piece of software from a respected company - with a price tag or without - I expect it to be virus free !

It is EVRSOFT who has no respect for me or my computer or indeed of its own software by including such code within.

And as for developers, I could code a HTML program (or whatever), with my eyes shut (if I had the time) - I am a Games programmer in my spare time, so don't go thinking (as you assume - and assumption is the mother of all cockups) that I am a software freeloader!

Personally I use Front Page (yes, the HTML section as well) or Notepad (I use both for web creation in ASP etc), but the Uni suggested that my wife use 1st Page or Notepad. - And Yes, Front Page is a legal copy :)

She will be using Notepad. - Guess its also better to learn as it will force her to make mistakes which she can learn from.

Ingrate?! HA. What? Can't accept geniune criticism from another poster? Get used to disappointment!

BTW: Flaming and feedback - I can't see anyone flaming here - only giving strong opinions - as one should when a piece of software installs a virus on one's machine.

SIX BUTTONS FROM HELL.IZS

This is a javascript that is a nuisance, nothing more. It is useful for illustrating code for opening windows and such. (only someone got a little carried away) Only very recently did one of the antivirus companies decide to label it a "virus." It is not - it has no self replication powers or other viral or Trojan characteristics. It can, however, consume more and more computer resources requiring the user to reboot or ctrl-alt-del to regain control of their computer. This could result in unsaved work in a file if someone didn't save regularly, but that is it for damage. When the computer is restarted or the script shut down, the only way to get it to execute again is to deliberately run it. Most people will never even find this script, let alone use it. I have run it and been able to ctrl-alt-del and regain control just by shutting down my browser.

I would love for Evrsoft to change their distribution and track down as many mirrors as possible to get a six buttons free version out in circulation. Maybe they will and maybe they won't. It doesn't change the fact that this is a useful piece of software to most users and 99.999% were blissfully ignorant of "six buttons" all this time. Those who did find it, played with it, got their fingers burnt, have now moved on to other things.

I simply can't believe the hysteria that this whole thing has caused. Evrsoft did not distribute a virus - it has erroneously been labelled one in hindsight. To refuse to use the program simply because this script is included is illogical - you are throwing out the baby with the bathwater, as my Irish grandmother used to say.

So, here is my suggestion - challenge, in fact.

If someone wants to make a positive contribution, and show what a hot-sh*t programmer they are, post a "six buttons" remover that will work across all Windows platforms, and work even with a non-standard folder install. I have a lot of programming experience in database and stats applications and word/text processor macros, but I can't figure our how to program something to reliably remove the offending script, regardless of where it is hiding.

I looked at doing it with a batch program, but variation in how commands work between the DOS-based vs NT-based Windows means I couldn't be sure it would work for everyone. For example, in a standard install something as simple as:
del "%ProgramFiles%\1st Page 2000\ISCRIPTS\BUTTONS\SIX BUTTONS FROM HELL.IZS"would do the job. But in systems that don't have the %ProgramFiles% environment variable, that won't work. Nor would it if someone had installed to a different directory. So ya gotta do some sniffing.

So - I'd like to see you folks slinging code instead of cow pies . . .

'nuf said.
