Hello everyone,
I have just set up my new pc, and d/l'd the
1st page to it. I have also told it that
IE6 is my browser. However, the icon next to
the document is an AOL icon, and it refuses
to now allow me to preview my document in
the same manner that IE did. (I believe I read
where someone here had a similar problem, but
I did'nt know to say this to him then, maybe it
was the same problem w/program opening doc.)
Anyway, if anyone here knows HOW I can get
the doc. to open once again in IE, I'd be
very appreciative.
Thank you

Have you edited your browser list? Its the button that has a magnifying glass over it (in expert mode). Click that and choose "edit browser list". A dialogue will appear with folder icons. If you have a standard install the path to IE should be: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"

Is it possible that AOL replaces IE, or skins it? I just don't know enough about AOL - never used it.

Thanks David!
I thought I'd ask here, instead of bothering you w/e-mail again! (I must be becoming a pain in the neck!)
I'll try that....and I'm not sure if its' skinning it either. I'm
also wondering if I need to set IE up as my homepage, I forgot
and will check that too. I know the other pc was configured with IE as the homepage.
I'll let you know how this works out!
Thanks again David!

Okay DC,
I did all, (and I did have the browser set-up in expert, and it is correct address.) I also changed my homepage back and it is
still refusing to display like IE did....AOL is taking over! However, changing homepage DID give me back the IE icon. (This icon always appeared in front of html doc.) It just does not open same way....hmmmm???/ Got me thinking, but the answer just hasn't occurrred to me yet...
I'll keep working on it, really did want to see the pages w/color and all before uploading to the web!

C:\WINDOWS\EXEPLORER.EXE

Thanks Josh :)
I tried that one as my second choice after you mentioned, and then tried....still didn't work! LOL!
I'm still working on it, maybe we'll all come up with it at once!
I'm wondering if it has something to do with Windows XP, as it does not do that in my other computer, which has Windows 98' on it. ????

Nopers, that one didn't work either Josh,
but thanks for trying :)
It might be a bug in the program, or XP does not
"play well with others"...LOL
Hey, must be afternoon or so over there?
Its' 7:00 am over here!

Hope you find an answer, sorry that I can't help. Yeah, but are you tomorrow or yesterday, I can never remember?

I have an idea that AOL may be redirecting your request for IE to its own version of the browser. I don't know what would happen if you d'led IE 6 and installed it. It might overwrite some of the AOL stuff and then you'd be in a mess.

Try this. Install Netscape 7 (you should anyway because you have to check your pages in both browsers - no good having a page that works in only one!) Add it to your browser list. The Netscape path will be "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" or something like that

Sorry I can't be any more help. You need someone here who also uses AOL to help out.

The correct path is important. 1st page tends to shorten the path to the browser in the edit list. be sure the path is full and correct. i will show you an example of the path 1st page made for me that doesn't work and then the path I made that does work.
1st Page: C:\PROGRA~1\iexplore.exe
Mine: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE
although the first path should work, there must be a bug in either 1st page or Windows. let me know if this works.

Not quite on topic but you may want to check out this post (http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=3537#post3537) about how to make 1St Page your editor from within Internet Explorer - sort of the same thing but the other way around.

Is your XP set up like the post you had me
see DC? You posted a warning, and I am a
bit frightened that I am not good enough
yet to fool around with my registry. If I make a
back-up, (can I put it on a floppy?) and how would
I get my pc to send it back to the registry in case
I mess up? I would love to try, what you have said
in your post makes sense to me, I just wonder about
having the wits at my newbie point to fool w/windows
"heart" ?

hmmmmmm . . .

The registry change that the file I provided does is really very minor - more like cutting a hangnail than heart surgery on the registry. Consider my warning as "standard disclaimer" so that I can say "I warned you".

To find out how to back up the registy in XP - click on the desktop and then press F1* - do a search for registy backup. Follow the directions. XP has an ability to do a certain amount of self-healing and you can automatically or manually save a snapshot of your system at various times and then "roll back" to the earlier settings.

* This reminds me of the story about the drowning computer programmer - he died because he kept yelling " F1, F1, F1 "

Okay,
now I feel better! ;)
I have been reading about and experimenting
with XP, I see its' ability to reverse. Used it
once already...it will save your files, but any
programs you d/l'd or added are erased if they
happen to fall in that time slot you're "returning"
to. And since I'm on phone cnnection, losing a
program is disaterous! (2 or so hours to re-acquire)
But now that you've clarified, I'll go for it.

When you rollback - you roll back any changes made in the registry, or in replaced dlls, etc., including any changes made by a program(s) you installed since the rollback date.

I would assume you still have the zip file of the d/led program. All you have to do is reinstall the program - no need to d/l again.

I didn't even look for the programs' files!
(DUH) Thanks DC...;)
