View Full Version : Download how and where

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen:
Ironically, I have downloaded many computer programs over the years, but nothing has been as difficult as Evrsoft. It asks me where to download or to open the zip file, and I have no idea where, although I really do not have a preference. It sometimes will attempt to open up in MS Windows. Usually when I download another program, it goes to my desktop, and when I click it, it opens up and saves onto Program Files.
How do you download Evrsoft, and to where do you do that, and how or where do you open up the file or program? And despite your guidance, if for some reason it automatically tries to open up in Windows, how do I change that, especially if there is not a place to right click "Open File As."
Also, I suggest and give permission to a moderator to move this to the suggestion box to suggest that Evrsoft provide a route or instructions to do this. In the meantime, I would appreciate guidance. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Richard McCollim
PS, I think this little guy or girl is cute: :jumpy:

I have a DL folder that all my DownLoads go into. Once you saved the file, simply run it and place it wherever you wish. I created a special folder at C:\Internet\Editors\1stPage\ to hold mine.

It is good to have a handy folder, thank you. However, whenever I try to open or save the Evrsoft download, it asks me where, and a box gives me options such as MS Excel, MS Word, Outlook, and other program files. I do not know which ones of these files would open up the download, and there is not an option for creating a folder or opening up in a folder I might browse to. Back to my suggestion box suggestion: Make Evrsoft easy to download. I have probably downloaded dozens, maybe over a hundred times, of different things in the past, and each time it was easy. You click download and it automatically creates a temporary folder on the desktop, after which you open it by clicking the icon of the folder, and then it opens itself automatically and becomes a part of the program files, now a NEW program file. How can I simply download and open Evrsoft? I feel almost embarrased asking the question, as if I just saw a computer yesterday, but I really have downloaded dozens of times, and it was always an easy process in the past. :hellother

What is the extension of the file you are downloading? It should be an exe that you simply run to install.
[Added]
OK, I just downloaded the file myself and it comes in a zipped archive. You can use WinZip (http://www.winzip.com/) or WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/) to extract the enclosed exe file. Once the file is extracted, you run it to install it.

Let's start from the beginning.
I have downloaded many files in many years of my life using computers.
I never had to purchase a zip extractor program.
I have downloaded zip files so many times I cannot count.
On each and every occasion, there was nothing else involved except to click on the file I "Opened" or saved onto the desktop, and the zip file opens up and self-extracts automatically. There is no other step, no other complication, nothing to purchase, nothing else to get but the original download.
I simply cannot understand what the complication is with First Page.
I am interested in First Page to make my web building experiences easier, yet I have never found downloading a file to be so very difficult. I am wondering if the designer of First Page might make this easy because if it is this difficult just to download a file for First Page, then one could only imagine how difficult it might be to actually use the software. My 19 month old son can download a file, it is so very easy, yet I have spent numerous hours going back and forth trying to figure this First Page download out. It is after 7 am, but I am not waking up. I still have not gone to bed. Typically, it takes me all but a few seconds or minutes to download a file, not the night.
Now, I experience something newer than what I wrote above. Every time the download gets to 99% there is an error message that says, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." On other occasions, it downloaded to a Word file and there were scrambled words on hundreds of pages. I did not command it to do this; it was automatic. More recently, it appeared to indicate a zip file as I was opening it, although it kept stopping at 99%. On other occasions, it seemed to download, but whether I enter the file name in the RUN program or whether I browsed and clicked the apparent file or whether I right clicked and browsed "Open as," I could not open it.
I assure you that there is nothing whatsoever that could possibly be blocking my computer from accepting a download I initiate. Like I said, I have downloaded for many years, especially on the current computer.
Is there any place where I can, like all the other dozens or hundreds of downloads, just to simply click on the download file from the product page, and just have it work?
And to Spock personally:
How did you download the file in the first place?
Was the first step you took? What did you click, enter, etc.?

... And to Spock personally:
How did you download the file in the first place?
Was the first step you took? What did you click, enter, etc.?
I clicked on the Now Available link on the evrsoft home page (http://www.evrsoft.com/) which took me to the download page (http://www.evrsoft.com/download.shtml),
I selected one of thw two available Download Now links, and a popup window opened titled, "Opening fp2006-final-3.00-setup.zip". It contains two options; Open with and Save to Disk. I ensured that Save to Disk was selected and clicked on the Ok button.
An additional window opened titled, "Enter name of file to save to...". The proper name was already entered, all I had to do was tell it where to save when I clicked on Save.
I used Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder I had saved the file in, right-clicked on it and selected Extract Here... and the file fp2006-final-3.00-setup.exe was extracted to the same folder.
I double-clicked on the fp2006-final-3.00-setup.exe file to install 1st Page 2006.
Step 4 may differ for you if you do not have some version of compressed file handler installed but I'm fairly sure there is one built into Windows XP.
Is that exact enough to answer your question?
... Is there any place where I can, like all the other dozens or hundreds of downloads, just to simply click on the download file from the product page, and just have it work?
Evidently not. The error message is not a problem with 1st Page, as I was able to download it with no problems. :(
There are such things as self-extracting zip files, evidently 1st Page is not saved in such, so you will have to at least download a free trial version of one of the two software packages I suggested.
It seems to me that Windows XP is capable of also extracting zip files. Have you tried right-clicking on the file to see if there is an extract option?
Sorry I can't be more helpful but I am not associated with 1st Page in any way. All the Moderators on this forum are volunteers waiting for the actual final release of 1st Page 2006. I use 1st Page 2000 myself as there are yet too many problems associated with 1st Page 2006. All I can do is what any other ordinary user can do to help, I have no special insight into the company or the product. There may be others who can help you better but they have not yet visited the forum and seen your post. :shy:
If you peruse the forum you should be able to find posts where our membership have suggested other HTML editors to use while we are waiting for the final release. Perhaps one of those would prove less vexing?
This forum also contains areas where programming questions are asked and answered, so you could still derive benefit from being a member, even if you don't use 1st Page. Whatever you decide to do, if you continue to visit, we will do our best to help in whatever way we can. If not, I wish you the best in your future endeavors. :)
