I know you can set up servers so that a file path in a URL maps to a different directory structure on the server, and this is advantageous because it allows for friendly URLs. But how do you view your website on your own machine, then, if the links don't link properly? Do I need to install a webserver on my PC and view the webpage through that?

I set up a directory structure on my local machine exactly like I have on the server. Then everything works the same in both locations.

Just to add...what do you mean different directory structure on server? Do you mean in comparison from your local machine?
The structure is set up by you when you create the site so I'm a little confused when you state set up servers so taht a file path is the URL maps to a different directory structure....and you mention FURL's of which I don't see the key there, but anyway, to view your website on your machine is simple. Create all content in one folder and if all links are in the folder as well as images there should not be any issues unless files are outside of the root creation folder.
I will add this also...if you have a usb key, you can install xxamp on it and then you can have your own little portable server....works well.
