designersblock - You have a reasonable design there, but the main page really should just be that top bit, and have the updates as a separate page, in my view it looks kinda awkward

I developed this web site (http://www.halfadot.com/freehelp/size) as a 'help' site for designers. The main subject of the site is how design can be modified so as to increase the speed with which the site is displayed.
And, sure ... you can critique it all you want as well.

I like your site a lot, Mr. B...
I take it you aren't a Flash fan, then? Lol....
I try to optimize my own site here and there.... I believe my main page is about 70k, which fails your test... But oh, well... I need to put a new picture up in the middle anyway...

a 600kb background image of some highly improbable space scene that was about 2400 pixels wide
Wow, Andy, I actually made a website for my 8th grade math class about the buckminsterfullerene that had a 600KB, 2400px background image!
I would post a link, but:
A. I only have a little dignity left, and I'm not wasting the rest of it on a crappy website.
B. It has some horrid examples of my 8th grade sense of humor. (It's not explicit or anything, it's just not funny at all.)

The two sites I have are like 16k and 8k respectivly for the main page. One looks like well ass basically, and the other is unfinished but looking alright.
I like fast loading webpages over large pictures with text. And one thing I can't stand is banners that take up like 1\3rd of the page.

I just did a site for a friend, just for fun for me. And I messed around with different images etc.
BUT.........
He insisted on the lake applet!
He loves it! - what's a poor boy to do?
(Boy - in this context - is not to be taken literally!!!)

I would have had given you the link to my homepage, but unfortunatly, the host where I hosted it, went off few days ago, forever, I've got a backup on my hdd, but only the design, w/o the content :(
Maybe one day I'll recover the site...
Anyway, nice site to glance at: http://www.eye4u.com if I'm not mistaken, they have a very cute flash intro.

I used Frontpage 2000 (Microsoft html editor) for the first page, but have since edited it with 1st page and took all the crap out (or so I thought). The disableing of the right click was an experimnet with java and I just haven't removed it yet (just taken care of). I will also be removing the mouse over java buttons as Microsoft took java out of 2K and XP and it wants to download it, but of couse it is not on MS downloads anymore. I may provide a link back to sun, but since this is the only place I used it it is kind of pointless I think.

designersblock, I love the layout for your site. It is very compact and the colors look great. My only criticism is the somewhat large ads on the right side of the page. I guess it is good because I really notice them, but it takes away from the quality of the page. I shouldn't be one to talke though. My website is pretty pathetic.
www.deviantart.com is a cool site... (response to title)

I like your site Andy. Very nice, and the beginning is humorous.
http://www.deviantart.com/ is a cool site..if only they could have their banner stretch across a screen of 1024x768. But that's okay, I'll live. :)
Same thing with http://www.tmbfree.com/. Looks good on the 8x6, but there's a column of whitespace in the 1024x768.

designersblock - why do you have all of that lycos stuff at the top? surely you can find somewhere better to host your website.
If your looking for a good place to host your website you might want to look into the cream of the crop in the free hosting realm:

I've been working on this site on and off for a couple of years now :D The message is more important, than the work involved :p But it has been fun and using 1st page has been very satisfying: thorpe.spedia.net (http://thorpe.spedia.net) But a critique would be interesting:rolleyes:
