View Full Version : ?page=1, How and where to find tutorials?
I've spent literally 4 hours, searching the web, trying to find tutorials on how to do this.
I believe it's called "dynamic page style links", that are displayed in the status bar.
Now from the little that I've picked up, you can create a file with all the page links and then create a javascript, that will call the link you need and then load it. I may be totally off on this.
Do I really need to bother? Or is it just for looks?
Does anyone have a simple way of explaining how to do this or can give me some links, to tutorials, on the subject?
Greatly appreciated.
Hey, thanks Spock for trimming the title.
Heaven forbid, it might have been 5 or 6 letters to long.
There was no reason to trim it.
I've only had 2 people look at this thread, and one of them was me, so I don't really expect an answer.
And since you're high enough in the ranks around here, to edit threads, I would think you might know something about my question.

Is this what you are after?? (http://wsabstract.com/script/script2/statusanimate.shtml)
Thanks for the response.
Not exactly. Although, that's a nice little script.
I would like to know how this is done....
<a href= "http://www.somesite.com/psuites.php?SuiteID=643">Link Text</a>
It has the page and then an ID tag after it, that tells what page to load.
I'm thinking it's a script, just don't know how it's done or if I should even worry about it.

... I would think you might know something about my question.
Just because I'm a moderator doesn't mean I'm the best one to answer your question. I'm simply the donkey who kicks all the Spam posts off the forum and bans those who are over eager to harass our users. The reason I didn't answer your post is because I didn't feel I knew enough to be able to give you a useful answer.
As you can see, one of our members has offered you a link to see if it's what you are looking for.
BTW, I'm not sure how many fora you have used but most free ones are usually staffed 99-100 percent with volunteers ... just like this one. If someone is offering to give you technical assistance for free it generally isn't a good idea to antagonize them. ;)
BTW, your link doesn't work, even when it's copied and pasted. Either the site was down when I visited or you have entered the link incorrectly. Since it doesn't work, I have left is as is but be advised we do not allow most links for new users as we have been fighting a lot of Spammers ... :smack:

And I appreciate any help. If you'll notice, I said "might" know something about it. I was just confused why you would remove, "page?=1", in the title. As far as I know, that's not spam.
As for the link above, it's not suppose to work. It's for example only. See, this is the code you would see in a file to "create" a link on a web page.
Also, somesite.com doesn't exist. I made it up. I was going to put (example) in front of it, but I thought the link tags would be obvious and it not working anyways, would be enough. That's why I de-selected the " Automatically parse links in text" checkbox, in advanced mode. So it wouldn't work.
:messedup: :*D:
Maybe you can show me the correct way to post "example links".
Oh, and thanks for pinning that spam button on my shirt. I'm new here and that's something that is hard as H#$% to get rid of. I would never post anything spam. Period.
Oh and fergus, thanks for making a comment that has nothing to do with this thread. Great first post. "Keep it up!!!"

I removed it because you couldn't and it looked like a mistake. It was not necessary for the Title line in any case.

That is good to know. After wading through so much Spam it is sometimes hard recognize when someone is trying not to Spam. It has gotten almost automatic that if there is a first post with a link it goes in the Trash bin. :(
As far as the correct way to post an example link, you seem to have come up with a very good way of doing so.
Oh, and thanks for pinning that spam button on my shirt. ...
Spam Button? I didn't pin anything. When I am finished posting this I will take another look. If I think someone is a Spammer I simply remove their posts. If they get bad enough I ban them.

As you can now see, the post you refer to is no longer here. ;) I seem to be the only active Moderator left and for some reason I cannot be online, in the forum 24/7 to check for Spam. Like all the ones that left, I have other areas of my life that also need my attention.

Sorry to say but I have to call you on this one.
When creating a thread, you need to be specific in the title, so people will know what the thread is about. If not, they will, more that likely, pass it up.
Having a title that reads "How and where to find tutorials" is rather vague. People will pass it by because it's not to the point.
That's why you don't create threads that just read "HELP!".
You wouldn't put an ad in the paper that said "Things for sale". You drive 100 miles and find out the guy's selling "Dump Trucks". Well, they're things, right?
Putting "?page=1" in the title, people that know how to do it, will see it, and know exactly what I'm looking for.
So my chances for any help has dramatically dropped. :smack:

I don't get that either. Just because they're a Senior Member, doesn't mean thier "Happy Meal" came with a BURGER (brains). :tongue: ;)
Spock, thanks for making the change. It's appreciated. Doesn't mean I'll get more hits, but my chances are better now. And I never, once, thought anything bad about you. :D

It's a phrase, in this case I'd say it's a comment that suggests you're still picking at it (see: one minor topic change) even after it should have been over for a while.

Ah, but has the original question been actually answered?

By who's standards? The "topic" was just put back the way I originallu posted it. That's all. Being a Senoir Member, I would think that you would be a little more constructive than cracking wise.:messedup:

I did find this: but everytime I test it. I keep getting the default page, instead of the new page loading. Help! :)
<?php
$default = "home.php";
$allowed = array (
'index',
'example',
);
if( isset( $_POST["P"] ) || isset( $_GET["P"] ))
{
$page = ( $_POST["P"] ) || isset( $_GET["P"] );
if( in_array( trim ( $page ), $allowed ))
{
$file = $page . ".php";
if( (file_exists( $file )))
{
include( $file );
}
else
{
include( $default );
}
}
else
{
include( $default );
}
}
else
{
include( $default );
}

I believe I was getting harassed for my slipshod manner of moderating rather than anything aimed at you. I know you have a problem you want solved yesterday but try to get to know those who are going to be helping you. Most of the long-term members in here are very friendly and more than willing to help as much as they can but they also try to take things a little easier in here than in real life. A little off-topic humor helps to ease the pain when things go wrong.
Hopefully, someone will look past everything else and we can get back on topic.
I agree and, if it gets to be too much, I can easily remove intervening posts. Let's see how it goes for now though. Since you've posted some code, I'm sure someone will come in soon with some useful ideas. :)

Cracking wise? I was giving you an explanation of the phrase neither of you seemed to get. Now, I do know how to make that type of navigation, and luckily I'm a nice guy because otherwise I think I wouldn't bother at all.
In PHP there are superglobal variables such as $_GET and $_POST and $_FILE, and the one you need here is $_GET. This superglobal allows you to extract data from the query string in URL's (?blahblah is the query string). To illustrate this, say you had this URL:
http://randomsite.com/index.php?id=5
The $_GET variable in this case is $_GET['id'], and it is equal to 5. You can also define several at the same time, for example:
http://randomsite.com/index.php?category=blog&id=5
That creates two separate $_GET elements, $_GET['id'] is still 5, but we also have $_GET['category'] which equals "blog". You can extend that into infinity with more ampersands.
So, moving more towards the target of this post. Making a navigation system of it. I tend to use something like this:
<?php
switch($_GET['page'])
{
case 'example': // ?page=example
include_once('example.php');
break;
case 'something': // ?page=something
include_once('randompage.php');
break;
default: // anything else
include_once('index.php');
}
?>
You add in a new case for each new page, hardcoded URL's just make me feel safe, the paranoid guy I am.

Don't you hate it? You write up a reply, and then they just leave without letting you know if they even read it.
Don't you hate it? You write up a reply, and then they just leave without letting you know if they even read it.
1.) I have a life other than staring at the screen, tapping my foot, waiting for someone to reply. If a response isn't posted right away, than there might be other things keeping that person from responding. (Hence the "life" refference).
2.) I read it this morning (first chance I got) and wanted to see if everything worked, first, before posting a response.
3.) I tested your version out this morning and it works fine. Also, I finally got the one I posted to work. Now I just have to figure out which one to use.
I thank you for the help. It is appreciated. :)

I can see how much you appreciate it, so much in fact that you decide to imply I don't have a life. Believe me, I feel the love.
Read into it what you want, just don't put words in my mouth or accuse me of implying anything.
They were three valid reasons, for not replying to this thread, when you wanted me to. I even thanked you and said I appreciated it. Guess that wasn't enough.
There are two types of people.
One, that helps people because they care. Then walk away.
And the other, is someone that helps and then waits around for other people to pat them on the back and tell them how good they are.
Which one are you?

Sigh, I'm tired of this. It'll just go back and forth. I'm not going to argue with you, even if I think you meant to imply that (and if you didn't then your first point was extremely indecorous).
