I can maneuver a basic html page and being so clever with color and nabbing keen graphics out of cyberspace, it can look pretty awesome, but now I challenged myself.
I signed up for shared web page space from wazoo (no intent to advertize) and to my surprise was given a choice of servers.
In some kneejerk rebellion, I chose Unix over Windows *cough* without any real reason, given that I am using w2kpro and Lindows.
I really don't have the money for FrontPage to use the ... uh, what are they called?... uh... sorta plugins to get my page from my OS onto the Unix server.
But I do have great dumb luck. I bought WebPage Creator and did backflips when I opened 1st Page 2000, not that I really understand all that much of it yet.
After Christmas, I want to buckle down and master this program. I had Cool Page and am not sure why I lost interest in it and waaay back tried Arachno...well, yanno, that one.
My only question right now is this: should I stay with the Unix server? It seems that I have the tools in this editor to make it in there once I figure it out. Am I correct?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks, kind sir... yea, that is what the server told me at the time. Does that mean that I can put my site together and ship it on in? This is the first time I have used a server that doesn't have training wheels and a page maker thingy.
Maybe I confused myself about the Front Page stuff the Unix server supports, as though that was the only way to get a Windows page... yea, ok, nevermind...
So, I'm going to go ahead and work with First Page and then transport, er, I mean upload the whole shebang? Yay!!!
I'll search the threads when I can't figure out how to use something... thanks alot!

Most windows-based servers will also offer PHP. If you think that you might jump host platforms at some point, go with the PHP/MySQL. Whats cool about that is if you develop on a windows box, you can run it on IIS (included in Win2K/XP) and then upload to a Nix server easily. I have ported a PHP/MySQL site from IIS to Apache with little or no modification.
Even if you go with winddows platform stuff, I would absolutely steer clear of the FrontPage extension stuff. They are non-standard and nasty.

Thank for responding.
My server supports Front Page extensions, but I can't really get into the price MS wants for Front Page. I do have my pride and if I can operate all the great free or shareware web page programs, it seems kinda degrading and sucky to buy Front Page for $169 srp.
So, it looks like I need to turn my attention to the ftp programs because that's the guy who can hook me up. I downloaded one from nonags, but I haven't figured out what information goes in what blanks.
The page I'm putting up is going to be interactive, but I'm not selling anything.
I would like to find the code for the kind of page I see php doing, i.e. the one where the "forum" is just one topic and so the last post is basically looking like the lead article on the page.
My web host has a bunch of stuff for me to use but I don't really know what all of it is... I'll go over there and make a list... thanks.

Frankly if I was going to buy something it sure as hell wouldnt be front page. HomeSite would be a better bet. Or even better Dreamweaver ultradev, but its pretty expensive.

Okay, so I rooted around and found the IISS stuff on my 2kpro cd (sigh) and got it loaded.
I haven't looked through the help yet, I don't want to ruin a national holiday with ms frustration.
I picked up a nine dollar cd with two or three editors and it included front page express with no auto-uploading, so I am getting an easy way to dink around and design. It is nice to have the little thingy that keeps an constant display of how long it will take to download what I am adding to the page.
I also like First Page so far, even though I don't understand it very well.
Will the IISS program get me where I want to go, which is a Unix server? Is there suffiencient information in the "help"? Does Front Page -- any version -- make it impossible to upload without the program's extension thugs?
I don't mind using a different editor, I can easily transfer, right, right, huh?? Maybe not, though. Is the predatorial, er... I mean proprietorial ms stuff in the meta tag place, if that's what you call it?

Thanks, David... I thought you guys would be sleeping in.
I am sooo missing something.
Is Apache a ..., well, what is it? I'll go get it, for sure, but I'm just in that totally duh mode.

Thanks, David! I got Apache file downloaded and grabbed the php while I was at it... I started the database download and had to go, "like, wait a sec... my host server has a bunch of files sitting there waiting for me...didn't I see a database? or did I?"
... so I'm going to truck over there and see what I have going for myself.
I'm so relieved to see that you are *the man*. I can stop straining. I feel all hooked up now... WooHoo!!

Apache can also be installed on Windows, so you ought to consider installing that rather than IIS. See the thread at http://developers.evrsoft.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=855 for installation instructions.
HTH,
David Bindel
If he already got IIS installed and PHP and MySQL will run easily on it and can be ported to a Nix server without modification, why would you recommend him installing *another* web server when he doesnt really need it. Especially if he is (as he himself says) a newbie?
It's not like he will be able to monkey with the apache provided by his web hosting service...

True enough, I guess there are pros and cons; maybe when he has his feet under him :)

I can't quite tell yet if I have gone terminally stupid or I'm still making headway.
Okay, so my web host server (share) lists under my development tools:
1. Front Page extensions...so we scrapped that. One down...
2. My SQL: forgot to write down the version number, but it says "automatic" setup. yea, okay.
3. Perl: blah, blah, blah... "debugger" was all I understood there.
4. PhP: I take it that this is supported and they provide links into the belly of the PhP happening community: kerplop!
So, does this mean that once again I have instinctually done the right thing and all I have to do (ahem) is learn my way around First Page, do my site and send it over? Huh? Huh? Huh?

Okay, I have a page to send just to say I'm working on this site. I see that there is no send thingy in First Page and that link is gone... you said, if I remember, Cute FTP? Or, did I get that somewhere else...
Where do I find the means to package the honker?
Do I make a directory file and include subfiles for graphics? Ugh...I don't even know what I'm talking about...
I'll go find Cute FTP. I have a web space and ftp dealee with earthlink...is that viable?
Bess...gee only 3am...:p

I think so... unless you are doing MySQL work also. If you work locally make sure any database changes you make on your box, you duplicate on your hosting server... not sure if that is relevant to you or not...

Dunno for sure myself. Earthlink is cozy with Lindows.com, the Linux OS that just came out, but I'll have to jerk their chain. I'll be amazed if they are up to speed. My first try flopped...
And, I'm guessing yes on the MySQL. I'll share my design and use of the site when I get it totally set. I want to provide a service that will need a database.
I was hoping to get something up, but I think I'm running out of time.
I have some minor surgery (that's an oxymoron for sure!) coming up and Monday will begin the process.
So, I'll be limping along (not really) and quiet for a few weeks, but you ain't rid of me yet!
Thank you so much. I *know* how frustrating my posts are and being a newbie is a drag, but as soon as I learn something, I'm off to something else, so newbiedom is my fate.
You have been great...what generation gap?
