View Full Version : Temporary lock

I've been using 1stPage for a year or more and find it does everything I need. It's always worked fine, apart from very occasionally failing to preview changes on very big pages, although I see that has been documented elsewhere in this forum.
However, in the last month my PC has been locking up for a brief period, nearly a minute, during which no mouse or keybourd input is recognised. There is then a short period during which mouse movement is really slow, like the mouse is wading through treacle, then everything's ok again.
This happens while using 1stPage, often on clicking the Preview tab but it can be at any time. The REALLY annoying thing about it is that, once 1stPage has been run, even exiting it does not stop the PC temporarily locking. It has to be re-booted.
Has anyone else experienced this? (I've seen the six buttons from hell correspondence and deleted accordingly.)
Thanks for anything.

If you dont get any better replies, then I suggest you try this:
Back up any files you've created or modified in the 1st page directory (ie: template and other config files), then uninstall and reinstall 1st page and restore those files.
It might also be the case where a newly installed program that runs in the background just doesnt like 1st page. In that case, you'd have to disable the program, or find another editor.

Thanks ZA,
I have uninstalled and re-installed a few times already, no improvement. I can't think of anything I've installed lately that might be upsetting it, but I guess you're probably right about it being some kind of conflict. (I suspect Zonealarm, but I have no proof!)

My unproven theory is that 1st Page leaks memory. Once stranded, the memory cannot be recovered because 1st Page never properly releases it from sub-routines. When you get low on memory, and your system needs to swap pages, it begins to thrash and it is time to flush the toilet.
I have switched to AceHTML and have been happy with this tool.
1stPage developers do not instill in me confidence they will ever enhance what could be a good tool. What is even worse, they simply HIDE.

It would be a pity, as people drift away from 1stPage due to lack of support and development, to lose this forum which is really interesting. Although, it will inevitably suffer when dbindel takes over from bgates, which is surely just a matter of time. (My money's on next Summer!)

Following a suggestion from ByteWizard, I've looked at ACEhtml, and, sorry to say on this forum, it's solved my locking problem and is really a very good product, which 1stPage would be if it'd been looked after.
It's a pity, 'cos I've only just joined this forum, and I've found it very interesting, specially the PHP/MySQL stuff. Perhaps someone would like to change it to a general web techniques site?

This IS a general web developers forum. There are no rules which say you must use 1st Page in order to belong to or use this forum. Don't leave us, there are too many good people here.

Great, I'll stick around, then. So, the EVRsoft logo at the top doesn't mean we have to watch out language?
