I downloaded MySQL and installed it fine, and I am using some chapters from a book by Kevin Yank to get my first taste of using it.

Unfortunately I can't see how you connect with it.

I tried clicking on mysql.exe, and a window opened and immediately closed again. I can get the admin tool to open and have sweet looking traffic signals in my system tray.

I finally d/l mqsqlcc and installed that and got connected with that.

Did I miss something? Was there something in the documentation that I didn't see?

Now that I can actually use it, through the control centre, it's very interesting, and I can see what everyone raves about, using MySQL and PHP. They look very powerful and reasonably straight-forward to learn.

So...does that mean you dont have any more questions?

Thanks for the suggestion David.

I tried running mysql.exe from the command prompt and couldn't connect to the server. I'll keep figuring on this one.

I'll stick with the control centre for the moment, but think about the relative merits of the "front".

Zero Angel - I very much doubt it!! I'm only putting a toe in the water at present - who knows when I'll feel out of my depth again! lol.

Thanks for that David. I did it and was prompted for the password, but then got an error.

"error 2003. Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' <10022>"

The server is running. At least I'm getting somewhere.
If the control centre can connect (and does) do I have to somehow disconnect it before I can use the Command prompt?

Nothing succeeds like success!

I don't honestly know what happened but I now can access mysql from the command prompt! I checked the page you referred me to, David, and was totally confused (no surprises there, then!)

I think it was something to do with my firewall settings - but, quite honestly, I do not know what I did differently. I just hope I can repeat it!!

As Bob Dylan says: She knows there's no success like failure, and that failure's no success at all" whatever that means.

Once again I am indebted to you and everyone at this forum for assistance. What a resource you all are!
