Link exchanging can generally be a big waste of time.
If you want to do it then I suggest the following:
1) Type the keyword you want to rank for into google.
2) Open a new browser.
3) Go to yahoo site search.
4) Copy the top result from step 1 into yahoo site search
5) Select links not from this domain
6) export into a spreadsheet. This gives you the first 1000 (I think) links that point to the top site in the serps.
7) repeat steps 1-6 for all of the other sites on page 1 of google.
8) contact all of those companies to see if they want to swap links
9) Drink a lot of beer to drown your sorrows when maybe 10% of them (if you're lucky) reply.
A far better way is to try & get one way backlinks from high PR authority sites, but it's time consuming, boring, and has variable results.
Have fun!

Link exchanges (reciprocal links) are supposed to be very easy, but I think it doesn’t have that much value when it comes to Google. Reciprocal is a much less return on time spent. It’s only good if the sites you're trading links with are top quality and do not have a lot of outbound links.
And, link exchanges often want you to have page rank and history. But , usually new sites have very little to give in exchange.

Hey, mates
At best it will tell Google what your site is about but it is not the "vote of confidence" it used to be. When the 'bot sees reciprical links, it looks like they cancel each other out. Write good content, get your name out there, and the links will follow.
If you really want to spend money on this buy a one-way link on a popular site in your subject matter. That will be worth more than a link exchange. One-way links are 100 times more valueable than link exchanging. Commenting on blogs and forums, real comments, not spam, is a great way to get the name of your site and your expertise picked up. And write more articles.
Best wishes

Link exchange is the process by which you can submit your link on the others website by one way or two way. in one way you can post your link on others website without placing their link on your website where in two way you must have to place link of the website on which your are going to put yours.

Re:
The Link Exchange is a free link exchange directory with categorized listings of sites that actively exchange links. Browse the directory for quality sites with topics that your visitors would find useful.

Very good point, my friend! It's pretty contraproductive and even harmfu; to do link exchange nowadays, this is one of the practices Panda is set to neutralise. If a site already has too many exchanged links, it may end up wiped out in Google sandbox for 3 to 6 months.
